A rare seahorse has been spotted in the Khor Al Adaid Nature Reserve, offering an encouraging sign of the health and biodiversity of one of Qatar’s most important marine habitats.
The Marine Protection Department at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) recorded the seahorse — locally known as Buzaizi — at Sealine Beach during a field survey yesterday to document marine species and monitor their natural habitats.
The seahorse was found among seagrass beds, one of the species’ principal habitats. The inspection showed that the site was in good environmental condition and offered suitable conditions for the seahorse’s continued presence.
Diving teams also found no visible evidence of violations or direct environmental damage in the surveyed area.
The ministry described the seahorse as a rare marine fish of considerable ecological importance and a valuable indicator of the overall health of the marine ecosystem.
Its presence within the reserve underlines the crucial role played by natural habitats, particularly seagrass meadows, in sustaining marine life and supporting biodiversity.
MoECC stressed the need to protect these sensitive habitats, curb practices that could harm marine life and reinforce monitoring and conservation efforts to ensure the long-term survival of Qatar’s marine species and preserve the country’s rich biodiversity.
