Sidra Medicine, The View Hospital partner to expand access to cord blood banking services
Sidra Medicine, a member of Qatar Foundation, has signed an agreement with The View Hospital to offer its umbilical cord blood banking services to expectant families.
The partnership expands access to one of Qatar’s most advanced cord blood banking programmes, giving parents in the country the opportunity to preserve their newborn’s stem cells for potential future medical use.
Eligible maternity patients at The View Hospital can now register to access Sidra Medicine’s cord blood banking service as part of their care. After collection, samples will be transported to Sidra Medicine’s Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) facility for processing, testing, and long-term cryogenic storage under internationally recognised quality standards.
Cord blood contains stem cells which are used in the treatment of a range of blood, immune, and genetic disorders with ongoing research to explore their potential in regenerative medicine for diseases like cerebral palsy, autism and type 1 diabetes. The collection of the cord blood is painless and risk-free for both mother and baby — done after the cord is clamped and cut. It is a one-time collection opportunity and is not possible to harvest the tissue later in life.
Mohammad al-Mana, acting chief executive officer and Member of the Board of Governors at Sidra Medicine, said: "At Sidra Medicine, we are committed to making advanced healthcare services more accessible to families across Qatar. Our partnership with The View Hospital reflects a shared vision of delivering seamless, patient-centred maternity care while expanding access to Qatar’s only cord blood banking services. By combining clinical expertise with advanced laboratory capabilities, we give expectant parents greater choice and confidence. Preserving this biological resource may support future treatment opportunities for their children and families.”
Yannis Angouras, hospital director at The View Hospital, said: "We are committed to providing families with access to world-class quality care throughout every stage of life, beginning at birth. This collaboration with Sidra Medicine complements our unique enriched services to woman and child, connecting expectant parents with Qatar’s leading cord blood banking capabilities”.
The agreement reflects both organisations’ shared commitment to advancing maternal and newborn care through innovation, collaboration, and patient-centred services. By integrating cord blood banking into the maternity pathway, the partnership gives families greater access to advanced healthcare options while supporting informed decision-making during pregnancy.
The GMP facility at Sidra Medicine is the only facility in Qatar to provide local cord blood storage; offering families the unparalleled advantage of keeping the samples in the country. This ensures their optimal quality and immediate access when needed most. The GMP facility also prepares bone marrow stem cells for transplantation and advanced cell and gene therapy products for the paediatric treatment of patients at the hospital.
