2,500 Qatar projects tap Gord energy platform
Simulation tool now used by more than 100 organisations
More than 100 organisations have deployed a Qatari-developed simulation tool across 2,500 projects — from mosques and hospitals to high-rise offices and industrial plants — to measure and cut the energy consumed by buildings, which account for 40% of the total.
Energia Suite, built by the Gulf Organisation for Research and Development (Gord), was designed "to make energy performance measurable, understandable, and actionable," said founding chairman Dr Yousef Alhorr. It has been used on offices, retail and residential space, mosques, sports and fitness facilities, educational institutions, industrial environments, healthcare centres and hospitality developments.
"As 40% of energy is consumed in building operations, reducing energy usage within buildings is crucial for lowering the carbon footprint, whether locally or globally," Dr Alhorr said. "There are many strategies and techniques to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. However, to assess the impact of such solutions, you need assessment tools."
The platform, he said, is the first of its kind in the region. It allows developers and project owners to test in advance whether a proposed energy-saving product or intervention will deliver the savings claimed for it.
Energia Suite evaluates energy demand and estimates usage in both new and existing buildings, analysing passive design strategies, building performance and the performance of electro-mechanical systems. It then converts that data into benchmarks, energy performance labels and practical options for reducing consumption and carbon emissions.
Rather than relying on traditional and time-consuming 3D modelling, the tool uses advanced mathematical algorithms and a normative calculation framework aligned with international standards including CEN-ISO, ASHRAE and GSAS. It can be operated from anywhere in the world and is backed by a sophisticated calculation engine.
"Energia Suite can be used to assess energy patterns of complex high-rise buildings as well as smaller projects," Dr Alhorr said. "It is among our latest initiatives to support energy efficiency in the built environment."
Gord, based at Qatar Science and Technology Park, treats innovation as a continuous lifecycle, he added — "where innovation is treated as a continuous lifecycle that begins with ideation and extends all the way to regional and international scaling."
Through the Gord Institute, the organisation researches and incubates proprietary low-carbon intellectual property tailored to the harsh climate of the Mena region and the Global South. Its patented advances include eco-friendly cements, carbon-negative plasters and ultra-efficient cooling software architectures, while its 3D printing facility offers low-waste additive manufacturing and digital inventory solutions.
