The Ministry of Municipality has announced that the ban on kingfish fishing using gill nets will come into effect on August 15 and continue until October 31, 2026.The move is aimed at protecting fish stocks and ensuring the sustainability of marine resources, the ministry said in a statement yesterday. It said the ban is designed to reduce fishing pressure during the kingfish breeding season and help preserve stocks for future generations. Only line fishing will be allowed during the ban period, while the use of gill nets will be prohibited, the ministry added.It noted that regulating fishing seasons is among the measures being taken to conserve marine resources and sustain their productivity. The ministry said kingfish production in 2025 stood at about 3,484 tonnes, underscoring the species’ economic and nutritional importance.It urged all fishermen to comply with the ban and observe the permitted fishing methods, stressing that this would help protect stocks and marine resources and ensure their sustainability for generations to come.
