Close India-Qatar ties reflected on a daily basis: outgoing envoy

I complete my tenure as ambassador of India to Qatar on July 23, 2026 following very productive and fulfilling three years.

During this time, the age-old ties between India and Qatar were raised to the level of strategic partnership and our co-operation progressed across different fields.

I would leave Qatar with the satisfaction that we have made good progress in our bilateral relations.

However, I also go with a heavy heart as I would miss the warmth and support that I received from everyone in Qatar.

I would dearly miss the friendships and life in Doha, full of cultural and sporting events. I will always cherish the beautiful memories from Qatar.

A high point in an ambassador’s diplomatic career is the visits of heads of state and government between the home and host countries.

I was fortunate that during my time in Doha Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a visit to Qatar in February 2024 while His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani paid his second state visit to India in February 2025.

Both leaders also remained in regular touch on telephone, including during the current regional conflict.

Prime Minister Modi had also met His Highness the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani during his visit to Qatar in February 2024.

On the passing away of His Highness the Father Amir, one day of mourning was announced by India on July 13, 2026 to honour his legacy.

The regular contacts at the highest levels between our countries show the commitment of leaderships in both countries to take the relationship forward.

Besides the highest level contacts, there have been several ministerial visits between India and Qatar over the past three years.

Our External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar has visited Qatar several times for discussions with HE the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani.

Other ministerial visits from our side to Qatar included those of the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Minister of Communications and Railways, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Minister of Labour and Youth Affairs and Sports and Minister of State for External Affairs.

From the Qatari side there has been a number of ministerial visits to India, including from Ministers of Energy, Culture and Foreign Trade Affairs.

These visits have pushed the envelope of our bilateral co-operation further.

Trade and investment ties between India and Qatar have continued to expand with India offering numerous opportunities for high return on investments.

The Qatar Investment Authority (QIA)’s investments in India span several sectors such as retail, infrastructure, health and affordable housing.

Qatar also remains attractive for Indian entrepreneurs and businessmen given its focus on innovation and technology and supportive business ecosystem.

We have also solidified networks between businessmen especially through the Joint Business Council which was inaugurated in October 2025 when the Joint Commission of Economic and Commercial Co-operation was held by the Ministers of Commerce and Industry.

Gift City in Gujarat has emerged as a promising destination for financial institutions to open their facilities in India, including for QNB and DIG, over the past year.

Energy relationship between India and Qatar strengthened for long term over 2024-25, especially on account of the signing of contract for supply of 7.5 MMTPA (million metric tonnes per annum) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Qatar to India for an additional 20 years between 2028-48.

Even during the current challenging situation in the region due to blocking of the Strait of Hormuz, both sides have continued to co-ordinate closely with mutual understanding and shared views regarding freedom of navigation and commerce.

Qatar remains the foremost partner of India on both LNG and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

I hope that Qatar’s active efforts for resolution of the current regional conflict will be successful.

There cannot be a better country than Qatar for such mediation, given its experience and credibility in international diplomacy over the past several years.

It is a testament to its determination and focus on achieving regional peace and security.

I also take back friendships with ambassadors from different countries in Qatar. The diplomatic community is so well represented in Doha and given respect by the country.

I would especially like to thank HE the Director of Protocol Ibrahim Fakhroo for his support.

I would also take this opportunity to thank the leadership and the people of Qatar and its people for their trust, friendship and respect for people from India.

It was the warmth of people of Qatar for India that truly made my ambassadorship memorable.

The close ties between our countries get reflected on a daily basis in multiple ways with the commonalities in culture and family values.

The Indian community in Qatar remains committed to the country and its leadership and to strengthening India-Qatar relations.

They have also faced the adversity of the current regional conflict with admirable resilience of which I am especially proud.

I thank everyone in the Indian community for their support.

I am sure that the visionary leadership of both India and Qatar would ensure that we take our relations to newer heights in future.
