Qatar sends identical letters to UN, Security Council regrading Iranian attacks
Qatar has sent two identical letters to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the Permanent Representative of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the United Nations and President of the Security Council for the month of July, Zenon Mukongo Ngay, regarding the latest developments following Iran's attacks on Qatari territory.
The letters said that the attacks constituted a blatant violation of Qatar's sovereignty, a direct threat to its security and territorial integrity, and an unacceptable escalation that jeopardises regional security and stability.
The letters were sent by Her Excellency the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif al-Thani. The letters referred to Iran's targeting of the Qatari tanker Al Rekayyat while it was transiting the Strait of Hormuz on July 7, 2026.
The letters also noted that Qatar's Ministry of Defence announced that the country came under a missile attack on July 12, 2026, with the Qatari Armed Forces intercepting multiple ballistic missiles.
The Ministry of Interior said three people, including a child, were injured by falling debris from the interception operations.
The letters further noted that the Qatari Armed Forces intercepted another missile attack targeting the country on July 17, 2026, and that all necessary measures had been taken to safeguard the country's sovereignty, security, and the safety of its citizens and residents.
The letters reiterated Qatar's strong condemnation and denunciation of the blatant Iranian attack, calling it a dangerous and unacceptable escalation that poses a direct threat to the country's security, as well as to regional and international stability.
They said that the attacks constituted a flagrant violation of international law, including the 1949 Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols.
The letters also cited UN Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026), which condemned in the strongest terms the brutal attacks launched by Iran against Qatar and other countries in the region, and demanded an immediate halt to all such attacks.
They held Iran fully responsible under international law for the attacks and all resulting losses and consequences, and obligated Iran to provide full compensation for all damage suffered by Qatar.
The letters reaffirmed Qatar's right to respond in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter and the inherent right of self-defence under international law, emphasising that it will not hesitate to take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty, security, and the safety of its citizens and residents.
