Lekhwiya pulls drinking water out of thin air
Lekhwiya has developed a solar-powered system capable of harvesting moisture from the air and turning it into clean drinking water, offering a potentially vital supply for security teams operating in remote, contaminated or emergency-hit areas. Developed by the Internal Security Force’s Security Technologies Department, the system has been named “Badr” in memory of Second Lieutenant Badr Saad Mohammed al-Humaidi al-Dosari, who was martyred while performing his duties during the Israeli attack on Doha on September 9 last year. The announcement coincided with the first anniversary of the attack. Al-Dosari, who held the rank of Lance Corporal at the time of his death, was posthumously promoted to Second Lieutenant under the directives of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. He was also awarded the Martyr’s Medal, Gallantry Medal, Military Duty Medal and Bravery Badge in recognition of his sacrifice. The “Badr” system draws humidity from the surrounding atmosphere, condenses it into water and processes it to meet international drinking-water safety and quality standards, according to Lekhwiya. Atmospheric water generators generally work by cooling humid air below its dew point, causing water vapour to condense. The collected water is subsequently filtered, purified and treated before it becomes fit for consumption. Two versions of “Badr” have been produced to serve different operational needs. A compact indoor model can generate as much as 200 litres of water daily, enough to fill more than 600 standard 330ml bottles. A high-capacity field model can produce up to 5,000 litres a day, equivalent to more than 15,000 330ml bottles. This makes it suitable for large operational sites, temporary camps, disaster-response zones and locations where conventional water supplies are unavailable or disrupted. Lekhwiya said the system had been specially engineered to operate efficiently in environments affected by chemical or radioactive contaminants, strengthening its potential role in emergency and civil-defence operations. Its reliance on solar power also allows deployment away from conventional electricity networks, reducing dependence on fuel and supporting longer operations in isolated locations. The innovation brings together water security, renewable energy and emergency preparedness, while ensuring that the name of a fallen Lekhwiya officer lives on through a system designed to protect and sustain those serving in the field.
