Qatar Charity inaugurates solidarity market in Nouakchott to support vulnerable families
Qatar Charity has inaugurated a solidarity market in Toujounine district of Nouakchott, Mauritania, to support vulnerable and low-income families and improve their living conditions.
The project, funded by donors in Qatar, benefits about 60 families and includes 62 small stalls that provide income-generating opportunities and help stimulate local economic activity.
The inauguration was held in the presence of Dr Mouna Siyam, advisor to the Minister Delegate to the Minister of Interior and Decentralisation and Local Development Promotion; Fahad Salem al-Dosari, chargé d'Affaires at the Embassy of the State of Qatar; Abdallah Moussa Guèye, Hakem (Prefect) of Toujounine District; Omar Abdelaziz Mohamed, country director of Qatar Charity’s Mauritania Branch; and Ahmed Salem El Vilali, mayor of Toujounine; along with several local officials.
Speaking at the event, Mohamed stated that the market represents a practical step toward supporting low-income groups by providing sustainable income sources and enhancing local trade dynamics.
He emphasised that the initiative reflects Qatar Charity’s commitment to implementing inclusive and sustainable development projects, while strengthening social solidarity and encouraging small-scale enterprises that form the backbone of resilient local economies.
Strong Local Impact
For his part, Guèye noted that Qatar Charity’s projects have significantly improved access to essential services and advanced local development within the municipality. He highlighted the organisation’s interventions across key sectors, including health, education, culture, and economic empowerment.
The mayor of Toujounine expressed his deep appreciation, on behalf of local residents, to the State of Qatar—its leadership, government, and people—for their continued generosity and impactful contributions to development efforts in Mauritania.
Strengthening Social Stability
Meanwhile, al-Dosari described the market—comprising 62 stalls providing essential goods—as a practical model for supporting dignified livelihoods and enhancing social stability.
He added that the initiative reflects the strong fraternal ties between the State of Qatar and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, translating the shared vision of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, and His Excellency, President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani to advance sustainable development and serve communities in need.
Al-Dosari also expressed his appreciation to the Mauritanian authorities at both central and local levels for their constructive cooperation in facilitating such initiatives, and commended Qatar Charity for its impactful humanitarian and development work across the country.
A Sustainable Source of Income
Beneficiaries welcomed the project, noting that it provides accessible services while enabling them to secure a regular source of income.
One beneficiary, Mona Abdallah, said the market brings services closer to residents and offers her and her peers a stable livelihood opportunity. She expressed her gratitude to donors in Qatar and to Qatar Charity, praying for continued stability and prosperity for the State of Qatar.
