Qatar Charity drives Malaria prevention in Senegal with 16,500 insecticide-treated nets

As part of its ongoing humanitarian and health interventions to combat malaria in Senegal, and with the support of donors in Qatar, Qatar Charity (QC) distributed 16,500 insecticide-treated mosquito nets across three regions: Dakar, Kaolack, and Kaffrine. The initiative is expected to benefit approximately 33,000 people.

This project directly supports the efforts of the Minister of Health and Public Hygiene of Senegal to reduce the spread of malaria, while strengthening preventive health measures among the most vulnerable groups, particularly children, women, and low-income families.

Cooperation Agreement The distribution took place in close coordination with the Ministry, regional health authorities, and representatives of the National Malaria Control Programme, alongside local and educational stakeholders, as well as supervisors and teachers at Quran memorization centers.

An official launch ceremony was held in Dakar, during which HE Yousuf bin Shaaban Al-Sada, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Senegal, symbolically handed over 1,500 mosquito nets to Ibrahima Sy, Minister of Health and Public Hygiene of Senegal. This event coincided with the signing of a framework cooperation agreement between Qatar Charity’s Senegal Branch and the Ministry, aimed at strengthening cooperation in the areas of health and public hygiene, supporting vulnerable groups, and enhancing healthcare services in both urban and rural areas.

Beneficiaries Qatar Charity implemented a carefully planned field distribution strategy, under which 15,000 mosquito nets were allocated to Kaolack and Kaffrine, with 7,500 nets distributed in each area. The initiative focused heavily on supporting health centers as well as Quranic schools, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for students while protecting them from diseases that could disrupt their education and Quran memorization. 

The project aims to enhance the capacity of households to prevent malaria, provide health and educational institutions with effective protective tools, reduce infection rates, raise community awareness about the importance of using insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), and alleviate the economic burden associated with treatment costs and recurrent illness. 

Strategic Partner The initiative received wide appreciation from local authorities and representatives of the National Malaria Control Programme, who praised the role of Qatar Charity in easing the financial burden on vulnerable families. Participating officials also expressed their hope to expand the project to the southern regions of the country in the future, highlighting the effectiveness of such preventive measures in improving public health indicators and supporting community development.
