Hosts Qatar finished the opening day of the 4th GCC Games Doha 2026 with 10 medals after an impressive start in the regional multi-sport event. Qatar’s athletes collected three gold, four silver and three bronze medals following a day of intense competition among the participating Gulf nations.Qatar’s swimmers led the charge with three gold and two silver at the Hamad Aquatic Centre. Saadeddin Saadeddin claimed Qatar’s first gold after winning the men’s 800m freestyle in a Games record time of 7:57.54. Mohamed Mahmoud added another gold for the hosts by topping the men’s 200m individual medley in 2:03.02, also setting a Games record. Qatar’s third gold came through Emile Fouzai, who won the men’s 200m butterfly in 2:02.20.In the men’s 50m freestyle, Ali Tamer Hassan settled for silver after clocking 22.69 seconds, while Abdalla Elghamry secured another silver in the men’s 100m backstroke in 58.32 seconds.Qatar’s taekwondo team also made a strong start, securing three medals on the opening day. Maram Fatnasi claimed silver in the women’s under-67kg category, while Hassan al-Nuaimi earned bronze in the men’s under-58kg division. Shaalan Mohammed added another bronze in the men’s under-80kg category.In bowling singles, Qatar’s Bader Alsada took silver, while compatriot Talal Almarri settled for bronze.Saudi Arabia topped the medal standings with eight medals, including four gold, three silver and one bronze, ahead of Qatar. Bahrain occupied third place with six medals made up of two gold, three silver and one bronze. The UAE stood fourth with one gold and one bronze medal, while Kuwait claimed five bronze medals. Oman completed the standings with two bronze medals.Competition resumes Wednesday with Qatari athletes set to compete in nine sports - shooting, fencing, billiards, table tennis, bowling, 3x3 basketball, equestrian, boxing and swimming - as the hosts aim to continue their strong start at the Games, which run until May 22 in Doha.
