Qatar participates in NATO Council Meeting and Istanbul Cooperation Initiative Countries
The State of Qatar participated in the meeting of the NATO Council and the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative countries, held at the Alliance's headquarters in Brussels, chaired by Ms. Radmila Šekerinska, Deputy Secretary General of NATO.
Representing the State of Qatar at the meeting was Ms. Sarah bint Ahmed Al-Muhannadi, Chargé d'Affaires at the Mission of the State of Qatar to the European Union and NATO.
The Chargé d'Affaires at the Mission of the State of Qatar to the European Union and NATO commended, in her remarks before the meeting, the position of the North Atlantic Alliance condemning the Iranian attacks and expressing full solidarity with the State of Qatar, noting that the State of Qatar has warned, since the start of the war in Gaza, of escalations that could lead to further tensions in the region.
She recalled that the State of Qatar has been subjected, since February 28, to shocking and unexpected Iranian attacks that have undermined trust, especially since they originated from a neighboring country, stressing that these attacks did not target military sites alone, but also vital infrastructure, including energy facilities and installations.
She pointed out that these attacks threaten global energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz and disrupt international aviation supply chains. She drew attention to the global economic repercussions resulting from these attacks.
She renewed the State of Qatar's strong condemnation of Iran's targeting of its territories with ballistic missiles and drones, considering it a flagrant violation of its national sovereignty, a direct threat to its security and the safety of its territories, and an unacceptable escalation that threatens the security and stability of the entire region.
She emphasized that the State of Qatar reserves its right to respond in self-defense pursuant to Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, as stated in its identical letters to the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Security Council.
She referred to the State of Qatar's condemnation in the strongest terms of the attacks on each of the sisterly Arab Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the sisterly Kingdom of Bahrain, the sisterly State of Kuwait, the sisterly Sultanate of Oman, the sisterly United Arab Emirates, the sisterly Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the sisterly Republic of Iraq, the sisterly Lebanese Republic, the sisterly Republic of Turkey, the Republic of Azerbaijan, and the Republic of Cyprus, and affirmed the State of Qatar's full solidarity with these countries in all measures they take to preserve their sovereignty, security, and stability.
The Chargé d'Affaires at the Mission of the State of Qatar to the European Union and NATO affirmed that these attacks undermine the principles of mediation and dialogue that the State of Qatar and the Sultanate of Oman have long championed in the region.
She renewed the State of Qatar's welcome of the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2817, which condemns the attacks, affirms respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and rejects the targeting of civilians and vital infrastructure. She also welcomed the statement by the leaders of the European Union and the European foreign ministers, which reaffirms the relations between the Gulf Cooperation Council, the European Union, and the Middle East, and the necessity of de-escalation, regional security, freedom of navigation, and energy security.
Al-Muhannadi affirmed that the State of Qatar's partnership with the United States and its other allies in the fields of security and defense is firmly established and unquestionable, and that these partnerships represent a fundamental pillar for enhancing regional security and deterring potential threats.
In concluding her remarks, the Chargé d'Affaires at the Mission of the State of Qatar to the European Union and NATO reaffirmed the State of Qatar's commitment to working with its partners to reduce tensions, end hostile acts, and return to negotiations and diplomatic channels to enhance security and stability in the region.
