Emergency dept has an effective plan in place for services during Ramadan

The Emergency Department at Hamad General Hospital has made the necessary preparations to meet the anticipated demand for its services during the holy month of Ramadan, according to Dr Warda Ali al-Saad, senior consultant in Emergency Medicine and deputy director of the department.

The department has implemented a comprehensive operational plan based on analytical studies of peak hours recorded in previous years to ensure the highest level of healthcare throughout the month. She noted that accumulated data indicate peak hours are typically concentrated after 6pm and extend late into the night. The management has increased the number of medical staff on duty during these periods to ensure smooth workflow and reduce waiting times, particularly for cases requiring immediate attention.

The department has also observed a recurring annual pattern of increased patient visits approximately an hour before Iftar, when cases of fatigue, headaches, and low blood sugar tend to rise. Patient numbers increase again after Iftar and continue into the early hours of dawn. This distinct time distribution during Ramadan presents one of the department’s most significant operational challenges.

In response, Dr al-Saad said emergency management has reinforced staffing during evening and nighttime hours. Shifts from 3pm to 11pm and from 11pm to 7am have been strengthened, with additional supporting physicians available immediately after Iftar. She also underscored the importance of continuous co-ordination with internal medicine, intensive care, critical care, and ambulance services. Patients are assessed immediately upon arrival and classified according to the approved triage system, with critical cases transferred directly to the resuscitation unit for rapid intervention.

Dr al-Saad noted that during the first week of Ramadan, headaches tend to increase, particularly among individuals accustomed to daily caffeine intake, due to sudden withdrawal. Digestive disorders and stomach pain also become more common as a result of overeating at Iftar or consuming heavy meals after prolonged fasting. Dehydration is another frequent cause of emergency visits during Ramadan, often stemming from insufficient fluid intake between Iftar and Suhoor. This can affect kidney function and electrolyte balance, especially among the elderly and patients with chronic illnesses.

She added that one of the main challenges during Ramadan is the sharp influx of patients during specific hours, along with minor cases that do not require emergency care and could be treated at health centres or urgent care facilities affiliated with the Primary Health Care Corporation. Such cases may affect the speed of service delivery for critical patients.

Dr al-Saad also pointed to a notable increase in traffic accidents before Iftar, often due to haste, reduced concentration and fatigue. She urged motorists to adhere to traffic safety rules and avoid rushing in order to protect themselves and others.
