The Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (DI) held an orientation session yesterday to welcome students admitted to its PhD and master’s programmes for the 2026–2027 academic year.  The session brought together around 249 newly admitted students enrolled in the Institute’s 19 master’s and 8 PhD programmes.  Among these, 154 students are joining the School of Social Sciences and Humanities (SOSH), 85 are joining the School of Economics, Administration and Public Policy (SEAPP), 2 are joining the PhD programme, and 8 are joining the Doha Residence Programme in Advanced Arabic.  Dr Abdelwahab El-Affendi, president of the DI, welcomed the new students, wishing them “every success and accomplishment in their academic journey.” He emphasised that, despite “the difficult times the region is going through,” the Institute continues to advance and develop.  He highlighted that challenges test the mettle of nations and individuals and bring out the best in their qualities and values, stressing that “knowledge is the best weapon” in confronting such challenges, adding that preparing coming generations for the future and for different eventualities is among the objectives for which the Institute, and similar institutions in Qatar, were established.  El-Affendi highlighted several achievements the DI has made throughout its journey, including obtaining international accreditations following its local licensure, launching its PhD track, and attracting leading academic and administrative talent.  In conclusion, El-Affendi gave several recommendations to the new students, urging them to familiarise themselves with the DI’s policies and understand their rights and responsibilities, communicate with academic advisors and faculty members when facing difficulties, make use of the part-time study option when needed, and uphold academic integrity.  He also encouraged them to use AI responsibly and in accordance with the Institute’s policies.  Dr Amal Ghazal, vice president for Academic Affairs, said that the 2026–2027 academic cohort represents an important milestone in the DI’s journey, not only because it is one of the largest cohorts admitted since the Institute’s establishment, but also because it reflects the continued expansion of interest in its programmes and its growing academic presence.  She noted that the 249 students admitted this year were selected from more than 7,000 applications submitted by applicants from around 120 countries, reflecting a high level of competitiveness and diversity in the applicant pool.  Ghazal added that the Institute’s entry into its eleventh year marks a new phase as it continues to build upon the achievements of its first decade by consolidating the quality of its academic and research programmes, expanding its intellectual impact, and strengthening its role in preparing a generation of researchers and specialists capable of producing rigorous knowledge in Arabic while engaging with academic developments and debates at the international level.She concluded by saying: “We are proud of the outstanding calibre of our admitted students and look forward to them making a valuable contribution to the Institute’s academic community.”  “We will work to provide a supportive educational and research environment that enables them to develop their academiccapabilities, achieve their aspirations, contribute to knowledge production, and serve their communities.”  The orientation activities will last for another two days. Activities include introductory presentations on the Deanship of Student Affairs, the DI’s departments and programs, as well as meetings with the various schools.
