Sidra Medicine ‘positions into regional paediatric reference centre’
Sidra Medicine has emerged as a regional reference centre for paediatric care and education, according to a senior physician of the hospital, which in turn highlights Qatar’s advancements in the healthcare sector in the region and beyond.
"Sidra Medicine has focused on strengthening paediatric emergency and critical care systems, expanding simulation-based education, and embedding quality improvement into everyday practice. Initiatives include structured resuscitation training programmes, multidisciplinary simulation, development of evidence-based clinical pathways, and investment in research infrastructure that supports clinician-led inquiry,” Dr Syed Huda, attending physician and education lead at the Emergency Department, Sidra Medicine, told Gulf Times.
Dr Huda explained: "These initiatives have positioned Sidra Medicine as a regional reference centre for paediatric care and education, while also strengthening its international profile. By aligning clinical practice with education and research, Sidra Medicine has demonstrated that high-quality paediatric care can be delivered at scale within the region.”
Speaking about the latest developments and innovations by Sidra Medicine, Dr Huda said Sidra Medicine is the sole provider for paediatric trauma and tertiary care services in Qatar.
Sidra Medicine, an entity under Qatar Foundation, is a state-of-the-art facility committed to providing women and children with world-class tertiary healthcare services.
Meanwhile, Sidra Medicine will hold one of its flagship paediatric conferences, Qatar Paediatric Emergency Medicine (QPEM 2026) International Conference from January 16-18.
According to the physician, Sidra Medicine’s growing involvement in international collaborations, conferences, and guideline development has reinforced its role as a contributor — not just a consumer of global paediatric medicine knowledge.
He noted: "Sidra Medicine has prioritised patient safety, family-centred care, and workforce development, recognising that sustainable paediatric care depends on well-trained teams working within reliable systems.
It advances paediatric care by combining tertiary clinical services with education, research, and system leadership. As a dedicated women’s and children’s hospital, it provides highly specialised care for complex paediatric conditions while also serving as a national referral centre.”
He stated that beyond direct patient care, Sidra Medicine plays a critical role in training the paediatric and emergency workforce, developing clinical pathways, and contributing to international research collaborations. Its model is intentionally outward-looking, sharing expertise, supporting regional capability building, and aligning care delivery with global best practices adapted to local needs. To Page 2
Dr Huda said Sidra Medicine is expanding its focus on system-level resilience in paediatric emergency and women’s healthcare with several new initiatives.
"New initiatives include deeper integration of simulation into clinical governance, enhanced data-driven quality improvement, and stronger regional and international academic partnerships.
There is also increasing emphasis on leadership development, interprofessional training, and cutting-edge research that addresses real-world challenges such as crowding, workforce sustainability, and high-acuity care delivery. These efforts aim to ensure that paediatric care at Sidra Medicine continues to evolve in step with the needs of children, families, and health systems both locally and beyond,” he highlighted.
Dr Huda, who is the lead of the Scientific Planning Committee for QPEM 2026, said that from its early years, QPEM has evolved from a teaching forum into a platform that actively supports research, quality improvement, and knowledge translation. "The conference encourages participants to present original work, audits, and system-level innovations grounded in real clinical environments. By bringing together clinicians, educators, and researchers, QPEM facilitates collaboration across institutions and disciplines, allowing ideas tested locally to be refined, evaluated, and shared regionally,” he said.
