A four-day back-to-school event opened at West Walk on Wednesday, bringing families together through education, culture and entertainment while encouraging children to begin the academic year with confidencOrganised by the Hour and Hour programme, in collaboration with the Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, the event will run until August 29 from 5pm to 10pm, under the slogan “With Knowledge and Work, We Build the Nation”. Speaking to Gulf Times at the opening, Tamani al-Yafai, the chief executive of the Hour and Hour programme, said the initiative was designed to make the return to school feel meaningful rather than routine.“Our aim is to celebrate the return of our sons and daughters to school, instil in them the value of knowledge, learning and work, and prepare them for the new academic year with enthusiasm, ambition and positivity,” she said.  Hour and Hour programme is a Qatari community and cultural initiative that organises public events, workshops, and educational activities to promote heritage, tourism, and social cohesion.  The event combines educational, cultural, sporting and entertainment elements through workshops, competitions, performances and community activities.Al-Yafai said the programme was intended to offer families “a fun and enriching atmosphere” while encouraging participation and helping children discover their talents.The opening featured national, heritage, and artistic segments performed with children’s participation, giving the evening a celebratory character while placing Qatar’s identity and values at the centre of the programme.  “Today’s opening was special, with the presence of our guests and partners and the participation of our sons and daughters,” al-Yafai said. “We all celebrated the start of a new academic year.”Beyond the activities, the event carries a wider message about the role of education in shaping individual aspirations and national progress. Its slogan links classroom learning with effort, responsibility and contribution to society.  Over the remaining days, organisers expect to welcome students and families for an experience that balances enjoyment with learning and community engagement.“We look forward to offering an interactive experience that combines fun and learning, discovers talents and fosters a spirit of community participation,” al-Yafai said, thanking the partners and participants who helped bring the event together.  Her message to students was direct: “Begin your academic year with passion and ambition, for with knowledge we build the individual, and with work we build the nation.”
