The Qatari national football team are continuing their overseas training camp in Austria, which began on July 11 and runs through July 27, as part of preparations for the World Cup play-offs this October.Coach Julen Lopetegui is using the camp to fine-tune the squad’s tactical and physical readiness in hopes of guiding Qatar to a second consecutive FIFA World Cup appearance — and their first earned through qualification, following their automatic berth as 2022 hosts.Lopetegui announced a 30-man roster featuring several notable changes. Al Sadd midfielder Guilherme Torres earned his first national team call-up, while former captain Hassan al-Haydos, who had take retirement after leading Qatar to second successive Asian Cup tile last year, has returned to the fold at coach's request. Veteran goalkeeper Saad al-Sheeb was left out, with Marwan Sharif and Shehab al-Laithi brought in. The list also includes two fresh defensive additions: Youssef Ayman (Al Duhail) and Abdullah al-Yazidi (Al Sadd). The four goalkeepers selected are Meshaal Barsham, Salah Zakaria, Marwan Sharif, and Shehab al-Laithi. Other key players include Akram Afif, Almoez Ali, Boualem Khoukhi, Karim Boudiaf, and Pedro Miguel.Last month, the Asian Football Confederation confirmed that Qatar and Saudi Arabia will co-host the fourth round of Asian World Cup qualifiers — the continental play-offs — from October 8 to 14. The official draw will take place this Thursday in Kuala Lumpur.Qatar will compete alongside Iraq, Oman, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE — the six teams that finished third and fourth in their respective groups during the third qualifying round. The teams will be split into two groups of three, with group winners earning direct qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The group runners-up will face off in two-legged matches on November 13 and 18 for a spot in the intercontinental play-off.Qatar, currently ranked 53rd in the FIFA World Rankings, booked their place in the continental play-off after finishing fourth in Group A of the third round with 13 points from 10 matches. Iran (23 points), Uzbekistan (21), and the UAE (15) finished ahead of them, while Kyrgyzstan and North Korea rounded out the group.
