Al Sadd star Akram Afif seems a frontrunner to bag the Best Player honours for the season at the prestigious Qatar Football Association (QFA) Awards, the ceremony for which will be held at the Qatar National Convention Center on May 26 .The Board of Trustees of the QFA awards approved the shortlisted candidates for the Best Awards for 2023-2024 season following the conclusion of voting, screening and approval processes of nomination forms sent to the participants including top football officials, coaches and media representatives.Afif, also Qatar national football team’s mercurial player, has been nominated for the Best Player Award besides Al Gharafa captain Yacine Brahimi and Al Rayyan forward Roger Guedes.The curly-haired Afif topped the Expo Stars League (ESL) scoring the most goals (26) besides providing 11 assists while essaying a crucial role in Al Sadd regaining the league championship title once again. Brahimi helped the Cheetahs finish third in ESL while scoring the second-most number of goals (22). The Algerian star also provided his teammates with nine assists.Guedes, who joined Al Rayyan last August, played an important role for the Lions, who finished runners-up in the ESL.The Brazilian scored 19 goals besides making five assists.Meanwhile, ESL winning-coach Wesam Rizk of Al Sadd was named among the nominees for the Best Coach Award with Al Rayyan’s Leonardo Jardim and Al Gharafa’s Pedro Martins.Rizk led Al Sadd in 15 ESL games after taking over from Bruno Miguel, who served as the Wolves coach for seven matches at the start of the season.Jardim, however, seems to be the favourite to win the award having guided Al Rayyan to the runners-up spot but will also face competition from Martins under whom Al Gharafa excelled during the season.In the Best Under-23 Player category, Al Sadd’s Mostafa Meshal, Al Arabi’s Jassem Gaber and Al Shamal’s Mahdi Salem have received nominations.The nominees for QFA AwardsBest U-23 Player Award: Mostafa Meshal (Al Sadd), Jassem Gaber (Al Arabi), Mahdi Salem (Al Shamal)Best Coach Award: Leonardo Jardim (Al Rayyan), Wesam Rizik (Al Sadd), Pedro Martins (Al Gharafa)Best Player Award: Roger Guedes (Al Rayyan), Akram Afif (Al Sadd), Yacine Brahimi (Al Gharafa).
