Tasweer to open ‘As the Image Unfolds – The Language of Athar’
Tasweer, Qatar’s leading platform for photography, will open “As the Image Unfolds – The Language of Athar” at Bayt Al Wakrah on October 26. The exhibition features new photographic works by Mohammed Fakhroo, Ghada al-Mawlawi and Raja Aderdor developed during their participation in the five-month Tasweer Residency titled As the Image Unfolds. Taking its title from the Arabic word athar, meaning traces or imprints, the exhibition explores how image-making can be both a means of recording and a way of reimagining — drawing on personal, cultural and visual traces to develop individual bodies of work. The exhibition will be on view until December 15. Khalifa al-Obaidly, director of Tasweer, said: “Photography has the ability to hold traces of people, places and experiences long after a moment has passed. Through this residency, Mohammed Fakhroo, Ghada al-Mawlawi and Raja Aderdor have each developed their own visual language through research, experimentation and conversation. The Language of Athar allows audiences to see where that process has taken them, and how photography can connect memory with the way we understand the world around us today.” The artists were mentored by al-Obaidly together with artists Ghayyan al-Amine and Maria Ovsyannikova, who also curated the exhibition. The residency combined mentorship, critique and sustained studio development, giving each photographer space to test ideas and expand their practice. The exhibition includes al-Mawlawi’s Portals of Belonging, Fakhroo’s For Sale? and Aderdor’s Signs_Seen, Yet Unseen — three distinct projects that interpret the idea of traces through personal, cultural and visual perspectives. The Language of Athar also forms part of the wider Qatar Creates 2026/2027 season, a period that sees Qatar’s cultural calendar come alive across art, design, photography, heritage and other creative fields. The public opening will take place on October 26 from 5pm to 7pm at Bayt Al Wakrah. The exhibition will then be open Saturday to Thursday from 9am to 7pm, and Friday from 1.30pm to 7pm. Admission is free, with advance ticket booking required through the Tasweer website.
