Bughanaim rides Jeff Koons to Qatar Derby victory
Al-Jehan-trained bay colt edged past Azka by three quarters of a length to win the marquee race

Wathnan Racing’s Jeff Koons ridden by Faleh Bughanaim timed its run to perfection at the last stretch to win the Qatar Derby at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) on Thursday.Hamad al-Jehan-trained bay colt defeated Abdulaziz Mamou’s Azka by three quarters of a length to win the 2000m the marquee race, which carried a total purse of $500,000, for the three-year-old thoroughbreds (QA Gr1). Yousef Bakhit EB al-Kuwari’s Coco Jack finished third.HE Salah bin Ghanem bin Nasser al-Ali, Minister of Sports and Youth, in presence of Hamad bin Abdulrahman al-Attiya, Vice-Chairman of QREC and Chairman of the Asian Equestrian Federation, crowned the winners. It was a fourth victory for Wathnan Racing on another action packed 10-race card with racing connoisseurs witnessing some thrilling battles in the 17th race meeting at the Al Rayyan Racecourse.HH The Amir Silver Sword winner Ska De L’Aigle, owned by Abdullah bin Fahad AH al-Attiyah, returned to Doha to land the Gr2 Qatar International Derby for four-year-olds Purebred Arabians. The Francois Rohaut-trained colt galloped to a comfortable victory under Maxime Guyon, who notched up his third win on the day. Sami Jassim al-Boenain, Adviser to QREC Chairman, crowned the winners.Earlier, a thrilling conclusion to the Al Rayyan Stakes for two-year-old Thoroughbreds saw Soldier’s Gold edge out Ne Me Quitte Pas by a short head, grabbing his second win in a row and registering a third victory for owner Wathnan Racing and trainer Alban de Mieulle and a second for jockey Mickael Barzalona on the day.Meanwhile, Layeq regained the winning thread on second appearance this season, winning the Qatar National Derby for Local Purebred Arabians, as he powered home under Jim Crowley, giving owner Khalifa bin Sheail KH J al-Kuwari and trainer Julian Smart a valuable victory. Bader Mohamed al-Darwish, QREC Acting CEO, crowned the winners.The Mohamed Khalifa TR al-Sowaidi-owned Kanti De Bozouls marked his Qatar debut with a black-type victory, landing the Gr3 Qatar Purebred Arabian Derby for trainer Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte and jockey Aurelien Lemaitre. AJS Kabul (QA) (AF AlBahar x Grace T) got back to winning ways quickly, as he was guided by Oision Murphy to take the Local Purebred Arabian Derby. It was a one-two for owner/breeder Al Jeryan Stud and trainer M.H.K al-Attiyah, who saddled the runner up, AJS Jassas, in the same colours, as well.Matawar remained unbeaten on fourth career start, winning the Local Thoroughbred Derby and completing a double on the card for owner Wathnan Racing and trainer Alban de Mieulle. Mickael Barzalona was the man in the saddle.In the third race of the day, Ponga, carrying the colours of Abdulatif Hussain MZ al-Emadi, got off the mark on third career start as the two-year-old stayed on gamely in the straight to win the Al Rayyan Thoroughbred Handicap Cup for trainer Bader al-Balushi, completing a quick-fire double for jockey Maxime Guyon.The Al Ghazali Stud-owned Seulomonde also continued his fine form as he came with a late charge just before the line to get the better of a battle with Inherent and register his second victory in a row, winning the Derby Day Thoroughbred Handicap Cup by a neck under jockey Maxime Guyon for trainer Gassim Ghazali.The opener of the Derby Day saw one horse out on his own in the closing stages as the Wathnan Racing-owned and Alban de Mieulle-trained Balzac hacked up, under James Doyle, a distance of eight and a half lengths between him and the rest to win the Local Thoroughbred Premium Maiden Cup.RESULTS17th Al Rayyan Meeting:Qatar International Derby DayWINNERS: Horse, Trainer, Jockey1.
