The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) has seized a prohibited "multi-layered" fishing net in a fishing boat during the daily inspection tour conducted by Al Khor Marine Unit at Al Khor Harbour.Al Khor Marine Unit, under the Marine Environment Protection Department, confiscated the non-compliant nets and issued a violation report accordingly, in addition to referring it to the Al Khor Police Station in preparation for referral to the Environmental Prosecution, in accordance with the Marine Fishing Law and its executive regulations. The MoECC has repeatedly warned against the use of such nets during fishing operations due to their significant impact on biodiversity in the Qatari waters. It stressed that multi-layered nets catch all types and sizes of fish, which leads to the depletion of fish resources, reproduction and biodiversity in the marine environment. The Marine Environment Protection department has intensified its inspection campaigns at the Qatari ports and territorial waters, particularly during the fishing seasons. It also exerts efforts to raise the awareness of fishermen, amateur fishermen, and workers in fishery-related professions about the Marine Fishing Law and its executive regulations to reduce fishing violations and ensure the sustainability of fish resources. The MoECC has urged the public to report environmental violations and abandoned nets in the sea by contacting the unified call centre at 184, which operates 24/7.
