Former prime minister Imran Khan said yesterday that his Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party would not fall for the administration's "ill-intentioned plan" to postpone the general elections, warning that his party would protest if the Supreme Court's directive to conduct polls in the Punjab province on May 14 was disregarded.Addressing from inside his vehicle through a mike at the PTI's 'May Day' rally in Lahore, the capital of Punjab province, Khan stated that if the government failed to dissolve the "remaining assemblies" by the said date, his party would petition the apex court. The ex-premier, who was ousted through a vote of no confidence in April last year in what he claimed was a motivated "regime change” operation, said if the government did not agree to this demand, refused to accept the apex court’s verdict on Punjab polls, defied the chief justice and his fellow judges and violated the constitution, then "I want to say the PTI will come out on streets and we will bring the nation out with us”."I’m warning them and their handlers that if you go against the constitution and think you won’t accept the Supreme Court decision ... then my nation will come out with me and on the country’s streets we will get the rule of law established,” he said, calling on his supporters to prepare for the "battle for Haqeeqi Azadi (true freedom)”.Khan alleged that the government was evading elections due to its apprehension of losing to the PTI and its desire to eliminate him from the political landscape. The PTI leader noted that the Supreme Court had already set May 14 as the Punjab elections date, asserting that the only scenario in which the elections would not take place was if the government concurred with his party's position on combined elections.Outlining the PTI's prerequisite for general elections inclusive of provincial ones on the same day — which is the stance of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s ruling coalition at the Centre — Khan stated that the remaining assemblies must be dissolved by May 14. He added the party was only participating in discussions with the government based on the chief justice's recommendation."But if they’re making excuses for [holding] elections after [passing the] budget ... if they think we will get trapped in their ill-intentioned plan and will wait for elections till September ... then don’t have any misconception,” he said, adding that the PTI would take legal recourse in such a case.In a tweet earlier today, the former prime minister also cautioned about an impending street movement"Our country in its present precarious economic situation will not be able to withstand a massive street movement,” he tweeted.
