IECON2026 gets underway as HBKU highlights its commitment to education, research, innovation
The 52nd Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IECON 2026), hosted by Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), opened Monday, marking its Middle East and Africa debut and highlighting the latest innovations and developments in industrial electronics. The flagship event got underway at the Sheraton Hotel Doha with a formal opening ceremony, attended by global researchers, industry leaders, and HBKU officials. The conference will conclude Wednesday.Welcoming the gathering, Dr Eyad Masad, vice-president for Research, HBKU said it was an honour and a source of pride to host such a prestigious conference in Qatar.**media[506219]**“Our vision at HBKU is to be a pioneering impact-driven university that addresses critical challenges facing Qatar and the world. Our development reflects Qatar's broader commitment to education, research and innovation as drivers of economic and societal development,” said Dr Masad. The official noted that Qatar has created an environment that supports scientific discovery, technological advancement and international collaboration through sustained investment in universities, research institutions and advanced infrastructure.“Our research brings together faculty and researchers from across our colleges and research institutes spanning energy and sustainability, artificial intelligence and advanced computing, precision health and the societal sciences and humanities. We emphasise interdisciplinary research, partnerships and translating knowledge into solutions that benefit society and industry,” he explained.According to Dr Masad, HBKU believes that research extends beyond publications. “Our ambition is to advance scientific knowledge while developing technologies, informing policies, supporting innovation and contributing to economic and societal development. In this way, many of the technologies at the heart of IECON are central to HBKU's research activities,” he continued.Prof Jill I Gostin, president-elect of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, said in a video message that the conference has long been recognised as a global platform where ideas become breakthroughs and breakthroughs become real-world solutions. She stated: “This year, our host is the vibrant city of Doha, Qatar, a place where tradition inspires the future, and innovation thrives. It is a fitting home for a conference that continues to shape the future of industrial electronics and to expand its impact on society.”“Across a range of domains, from robotics and mechatronics to power electronics, cybersecurity, renewable energy, this conference stands at the forefront of discovery and collaboration. What makes IEEE exceptional is not only the depth of its technical programme, but the way it brings together researchers, industry leaders, and educators from around the world to advance science, technology, and education in the service of humanity,” she highlighted.Prof Gostin pointed out that this year's programme reflects that spirit of excellence and participants can experience inspiring keynote addresses from leaders shaping the next generation of industrial systems.Dr Anas Karaki, a scientist from Qatar Environment and Energy Institute and a member of the organising team of the conference, said: "When we talk about IECON 2026, there are many pillars and themes covered in this conference. Some of them include industrial electronics, which is a very critical part of the integration of renewable energy technologies like solar PVs, wind turbines, electric vehicles, energy storage systems like batteries and we look at it from different scales from a residential all the way to an industrial scale.”The co-chairs of the conference are: Prof Sertac Bayhan, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Gazi University, Turkiye; Distinguished Prof Haitham Abu-Rub, HBKU; Prof Mariusz Malinowski, Warsaw University of Technology, Poland; and Prof Erchin Serpedin, Texas A&M University at Qatar.Following the opening ceremony, Prof Xiaohong Guan delivered a keynote session on ‘Cyber-Physical Systems in the Age of Intelligence and Networking’ and Prof Maryam Saeedifard spoke about ‘Next-Generation Grid Architectures in the Era of Power Electronics & AI’.
