Safari Qatar, a leading hypermarket group in Doha, organised an Arm Wrestling Competition match on the occasion of the National Sport Day on February 14 in Safari Mall.This was the Season 4 of the tournament launched in 2017 and could not be held due to the Covid-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2022, a statement explained.The contestants were from countries such as India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Egypt, Nepal, Philippines, Syria, Jordan, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Yemen, Morocco, Palestine, Tunisia, Romania, Afghanistan and Ukraine.The contestants were provided online registration facility in advance and more than 200 applications were received in two categories - for those under 80kg weight and those above 80kg. In both categories, the first, second and third prizes were QR2,500, QR1,500 and QR1,000. The referees were Mujeeb Rahman and Joju Komban, who used to control professional sports competitions in Qatar.The competition, which started at 5pm went on until 11.30pm. In the above 80kg category, Nigerian expatriate Davis Chinei Akadi (Nigeria) won the first prize while the second and third prizes went to Indian expatriates Firoz and Vishal, respectively.In the under 80kg category, the first was prize was won by Egyptian expatriate Heba Maqbool and the second and third prizes by Indian expatriates Linto and Jobi, respectively.This year the competition was only for Qatar residents. Considering that some former residents, who won during the previous years had expressed their interest to participate in the competition, the Safari Group management is planning to organise the future editions for international entries too, the statement added.
