Jockey Alberto Sanna guided Abdullah Saeed Abdullah al-Mesnad’s Ghannam to Al Arish Cup victory at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club’s (QREC) Al Uqda Complex yesterday.Wasim al-Sahn-trained seven-year-old horse held on gamely to win the 1300m Conditions for four-year-old+ Purebred Arabians – the feature race of the day – by a neck from Mohamed Ghazali-trained Sha’alan.In the penultimate race of the day, Ghazwan Racing’s Midrass completed a double in the span of just five days and on the same course and distance with a quarter-of-a length win in the 1400m Handicap (0-95) for five-year-old+ Purebred Arabian for trainer Hadi al-Ramzani. It was a quick-fire double for jockey Soufiane Saadi.Earlier, Trainer Zuhair Mohsen was quickly back in the winners’ enclosure, having recorded quick-fire double, when Khalid Abdulaziz al-Kuwari’s Selous, under jockey Soufiane Saadi, clinched victory in the 1400m Handicap (65-85) for four-year-old + Thoroughbreds by a neck from Main Reef.Abdulaziz Ali al-Kathiri’s Shivraj was a comfortable winner of the 1400m Novice for thre-year-old+ Thoroughbreds for trainer Zuhair Mohsen and jockey Ronan Thomas, as he stormed away to finish two and a half lengths ahead of his nearest rival, opening his account.Al Anood Stud’s Al Sareh also got off the mark in style. Trained by Alanoud Khalifa al-Malki, the six-year-old gelding won the 1400m Maiden for four to six years old Local Thoroughbreds, as he powered away down the home straight under Carlos Henrique to win by five and a half lengths.In a thrilling finish to the Maiden for four to six years Purebred Arabians, Al Shaqab Racing’s homebred Gasham broke his duck. Under jockey Lukas Delozier, the four-year-old colt won the 1400m contest for trainer Eric Lemartinel by a short head from Aria Du Soleil.Faleh Suwayed al-Ajami’s Brazen Bow kicked off the Al Arish Cup Day, giving trainer Mohamed Ghazali and jockey Marco Casamento a winner, as the five-year-old mare won the 1400m Handicap (0-65) for four-year+ Thoroughbred by a half a length.
