Australia dominate England to take T20 World Cup

Australia crushed England by seven wickets in a one-side final to land their seventh T20 women's World Cup at a sold-out Lord’s on Sunday.A sparkling second-wicket ‌century partnership between Beth Mooney and Phoebe Litchfield helped Australia to chase down ‌a victory target of 151 with 17 balls to ‌spare.Having beaten England 16-0 in ‌the multi-format Ashes 18 months ‌ago, Australia comprehensively outplayed their rivals again in regaining the trophy.England’s under-par total of 150-4 was built around an unbroken partnership of 80 between captain Nat Sciver-Brunt and Freya Kemp.Sciver-Brunt made 58 from 53 balls, with Kemp striking 44 from 28 including a straight six off Sophie Molineux in the final over but they were starting from too far back after a sluggish start.Australia reduced England to 39-2 in the first six overs. Lucy Hamilton picked up her first wicket in the World Cup, slanting a delivery across Amy ‌Jones to have England’s opener caught low down by Georgia Voll at deep gully for six. MOONEY'S SUPERB TUMBLING CATCHWicketkeeper Mooney took a superb tumbling catch down the leg side off the glove to remove the tournament’s leading run scorer Danni Wyatt-Hodge for eight to give Annabel Sutherland her 50th wicket in T20 internationals.Alice Capsey hit Ash Gardner over deep mid-wicket for six as England tried to break the stranglehold but she was bowled by Molineux, reverse-sweeping, for 23 and, next over, Heather Knight was trapped lbw for two by the miserly Kim ‌Garth who led the ‌way for Australia with 1-20 from her four overs.Sciver-Brunt and Kemp upped the ante but the modest target was insufficient to test Australia.Voll signalled Australia’s intent by hitting the first ball of the reply from Charlie Dean to the boundary and although the opener departed next over, dragging on Lauren Bell for nine, Mooney and Litchfield flayed the England attack.They took out a huge chunk of the target in the first 10 overs, reaching 98-1, and kept their foot to the floor.Litchfield, who hit two sixes, was eventually bowled by Dean for 48 off 35 balls, with Mooney following for 64 off 49, and Ellyse Perry saw Australia home at a canter after being given a life when a catch by Sophie Ecclestone was controversially ruled out by the TV umpire.Victory was confirmed ‌with four wides from a wayward delivery from Ecclestone - a neat summation of England's day.  BRIEF SCORESAustralia 153 for 3 (Mooney 64, Litchfield 48) beat England 150 for 4 (Sciver-Brunt 58*, Kemp 44*, Hamilton 1-19) by seven wickets

India’s 15-year-old batting sensation Sooryavanshi makes debut against England

India batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi became the youngest player to represent the country after receiving his maiden international cap ahead of Saturday's Twenty20 International against England in Manchester, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing record.The left-hander was presented his cap by teammate Tilak Varma before the start of the match, becoming India's 122nd men's T20 international and its youngest international cricketer at 15 years and 99 days.India captain Shreyas Iyer said Sooryavanshi had earned his place in the squad and backed the teenager to cope with the demands of international cricket."He completely deserves to be in the squad," Iyer said after winning the toss and electing to bat."He's someone who doesn't take pressure at all. Has an unflinching nature. He's very well aware of what's going to come in these coming matches."Sooryavanshi's debut eclipses one of Indian cricket's most enduring milestones. Tendulkar was 16 when he made his international debut in a test match against Pakistan in Karachi in November 1989 before going on to become one of the game's greatest players.Widely regarded as one of India's brightest prospects, Sooryavanshi earned his first senior call-up after a meteoric rise that began with a blistering 35-ball century in the Indian Premier League (IPL) last year.The teenager further enhanced his reputation in this year's IPL, finishing as the tournament's leading run-scorer with a strike rate of more than 237 and setting a competition record by hitting 72 sixes.His performances prompted growing calls for a place in the national side, though selectors resisted fast-tracking him and waited until he turned 15 in March before naming him in India's squads for the T20 series in Ireland and England.Sooryavanshi did not feature in either match against Ireland, remaining on the sidelines as India suffered a shock 2-0 series defeat.He was handed his opportunity against England in the second match of the five-game series after the opener at Old Trafford ended without a result, leaving the contest level at 0-0. Sooryavanshi, opening after India elected to bat first, hit Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue for a six each, but was stumped as he tried to charge Will Jacks down the ground, departing for 14 off 10 balls. England captain Harry Brook had said during the toss that the hosts were prepared for Sooryavanshi's threat."Done some homework on Vaibhav, we have some tactical decisions. Just a matter of executing now," Brook said.

ETPL 'best thing' ever for European cricket, says Waugh

Former Australia captain Steve Waugh said on Thursday the new European T20 franchise competition would benefit from the presence of top stars and fast-track the growth of cricketers in the region.Waugh is among the owners of the Amsterdam Flames in one of the league's six franchises based in Dublin, Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Rotterdam and Amsterdam."We have just seen how strong European cricket is. I mean (Ireland) just beaten world champions India 2-0 in a T20 series and that shows potential for cricket in Europe," Waugh told Indian reporters in a video call after the conclusion of the ETPL player draft."There are excellent players all throughout Europe, particularly Netherlands, Scotland and Ireland, and they will showcase their skills in this league."The former batter said: "We have got some world-class players in Mitchell Marsh, Steve Smith and Tim David, and they will be rubbing shoulders with these guys for five or six weeks.""They are going to be fast-tracking their success with their knowledge, their mental application. This will be the best thing for European cricket that has ever happened," he added. 36 PLAYERS SELECTEDThirty-six players from Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands have been selected across the franchises.India's Ravichandran Ashwin will be captain and mentor of Dublin Guardians, who are co-owned by Indian batting great Rahul Dravid.Ashwin, an off-spinner who ended his career with 537 Test wickets, said the ETPL will be key in spreading the sport globally."There is an Olympics that's going to happen in a couple of years and if cricket as a game is serious about making it a global affair, I think the teams in this league will play a very crucial part in enabling that," said Ashwin."This is a really really exciting prospect. It is about Scottish players, about Dutch and about the Irish players and that is something we were very clear from the first day."Los Angeles 2028 will see cricket returning to the Olympics for the first time since 1900, with a six-team T20 event in both the men's and women's game.The ETPL's inaugural edition will feature 32 matches from August 26 to September 20.

Brook ready for "great honour" of succeeding Stokes as Test skipper

Harry Brook said Tuesday it would be a "great honour" to succeed Ben Stokes as England's Test captain even if that meant he was responsible for leading the side in all three international formats.Brook is set to skipper England in Wednesday's first T20 against India at Chester-le-Street and found himself talking to reporters just a day after Stokes bowed out of international cricket with a thumping 160-run loss to New Zealand in the third Test at Trent Bridge.Brook, also involved in a defeat that condemned England to a 2-1 series loss to the Black Caps, is now set to be at the helm for eight white-ball matches in just 18 days against India.But Brook said he would have no qualms about succeeding Stokes, who gave him his "100 percent support" for the role of Test skipper during his final press conference as captain."It's not up to me but if I got offered it then I'd be happy to take it," the talented 27-year-old batsman told reporters."I don't know yet (if it will happen) but it would be a great honour to do it. It'd be a privilege to captain England in the highest format of our game and the pinnacle."Playing Test cricket is the greatest thing I've ever done in my life, and it's a dream, something I've always wanted to do since I could speak," added Brook, who averages an impressive 53 in the format, with 10 hundreds in 38 matches.Head coach Brendon McCullum, in charge of both red and white-ball teams, indicated Monday that England would take their time over appointing Stokes's successor given it is over a month before their next Test -- against Pakistan at Brook's Headingley home ground. CONGESTED FIXTURE SCHEDULEEngland's congested fixture schedule, allied to concerns about the detrimental impact on a player's form were he to lead the side in all three formats, has led officials to shy away from making one man the captain in Test, 50-over and T20 cricket"I think it would be a tough job, but everything's tough in cricket," said Brook. "It's a hard sport."The other leading candidate to succeed Stokes is Joe Root, who as England's Test captain from 2017 to 2022 and stepped in when Stokes was deemed unavailable for the second match of the New Zealand series following a nightclub incident subject to a disciplinary investigation.Brook is the official Test vice-captain but his altercation with a bouncer in Wellington last November -- an incident that led to the imposition of a curfew that Stokes broke -- made England wary of leaving him in charge at the Oval."Making Rooty captain that week was definitely the right decision," said Brook."He's been a stalwart for English cricket," he added of his Yorkshire team-mate. "The ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) needed him that week and he stepped up. My job was to help him as much as possible."

Gardner stars as Australia thrash the West Indies in Women's T20 World Cup semi-final

Ashleigh Gardner starred with both bat and ball as Australia booked their place in the Women's T20 World Cup final with an eight-wicket thrashing of the West Indies at the Oval on Tuesday.Set just 126 to win, six-time champions Australia reached their target with a mammoth seven overs to spare to remain undefeated at this tournament heading into Sunday's final at Lord's.Off-spinner Gardner struck twice in an over on her way to figures of 2-13 in the West Indies' meagre 125-7.And Gardner, the player of the match, then made 35 not out in the chase, with opener Beth Mooney unbeaten on 61."A bit of momentum always helps," said Gardner at the presentation ceremony. "We knew it was going to be a nice wicket and really pleasing to get the win."I feel like I haven't had an impact with the ball in this tournament, so to save my best until now was really pleasing."Tuesday's meagre semi-final target was unlikely to challenge an Australia side who had achieved a tournament-record chase of 171 while knocking out India in their final group game.DOTTIN SCAREBut the West Indies were left thinking of what might have been after experienced batter Deandra Dottin appeared to faint while the teams were lining-up for the national anthems and had to be helped from the field.Listed to bat at number five, she came in at eight with the West Indies deep in trouble at 83-6.Dottin's 26 not out, off 16 balls including four fours -- a mixture of elegant drives, scopps and ramps -- at least got her side to a total beyond 100.But by that stage the West Indies had already been derailed by a collapse that saw four wickets lost for 12 runs in 17 balls as they slumped to 59-4."She (Dottin) is a massive fighter and someone you never see go down," said West Indies captain Hayley Matthews."To see her almost passing out like that after the anthem was a bit scary. A bit of a medical emergency, but it shows how much of a fighter she is that she came back out and threw a few punches at the Aussies." WORRYING MOMENT FOR AUSTRALIAThere was worrying moment for Australia when Ellyse Perry retired hurt with a thigh problem at the end of the seventh over.But Australia captain Sophie Molineux had no doubt that the veteran all-rounder would be fit for a final against either unbeaten hosts England or South Africa, who meet in Thursday's second semi-final at the Oval."Just some quad tightness," said Molineux of Perry. "It sounds like she'll be more than OK to go on Sunday.Reflecting on her team's performance, Molineux added: "I thought we bowled really well."We held our nerve and then we wanted to get it done as quickly as possible, and Moons and Ash were clinical."Perry's exit made little difference to the outcome of the semi-final with Gardner sealing victory with an elegant flick off her legs for four. BRIEF SCORES Australia 127 for 2 (Mooney 61*, Gardner 35*) beat West Indies 125 for 7 (Matthews 30, Dottin 26*, Gardner 2-13, Wareham 2-17) by eight wickets

Ireland stun India 2-0 in T20 series with thrilling one-run win

Ireland beat 20-over world champions India 2-0 in their two-match T20 bilateral series, as they secured a thrilling one-run win ‌over the white-ball heavyweights on Sunday.Ireland's Jai Moondra and Matt ‌Hollard dismantled the Indian batting line-up with three-wicket ‌hauls as the visitors ‌could only manage 153-9 ‌after Ireland, put in to bat, posted 154-8 on a rain-disrupted afternoon in Belfast.The hosts, who earned their first-ever victory over India on Friday, handed the visitors their first T20 series defeat since 2023."I challenged the lads the other day to show the world that (the first win) wasn't a one-off," said Ireland captain Lorcan Tucker."We have a lot of lads with very few caps but they showed great character... it is a ‌great time to be a professional cricketer in Ireland."Ireland made a shaky start as their openers fell in the first three overs and Prince Yadav (3-22) making his T20 debut for India, helped restrict the flow of runs in the first half of the innings.But Harry Tector (53) and Ben Calitz (37) helped Ireland recover and post a competitive total.In reply, player-of-the-series Moondra (3-32) dismissed Indian openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma in the very first ‌over, and bowled captain ‌Shreyas Iyer in the third over, leaving India reeling at 19-3.Tilak Varma's fighting knock of 55 kept India in the hunt, but Hollard (3-26) got him caught by wicketkeeper Tucker, dealing a crucial blow to the visitors' hopes.Still, Harshit Rana (21 off 10 balls) got the visitors close, and they needed eight runs to win from the last two balls. But Rana was caught trying to hit Tector for a six off the penultimate delivery to seal Ireland's win."Kudos to (Ireland), the way they played. Showed professionalism, they had tremendous idea of how the wicket was going to play," Iyer said.India next visit England for a five-match T20 series starting July ‌1, followed by three 50-over matches. BRIEF SCORESIreland 154 for 8 (Tector 53, Prince 3-22) beat India 153 for 9 (Tilak 55, Hollard 3-26, Moondra 3-32) by one run

Ireland shock T20 world champions India as Sooryavanshi denied debut

Ireland stunned T20 world champions India with a landmark 34-run win in their series opener in Belfast on Friday after the tourists opted against giving an international debut to teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.The 15-year-old batting prodigy forced his way into the squad for the white-ball tours of Ireland and England following several stunning displays in the 20 overs per side Indian Premier League.Sooryavanshi emerged as the leading run-scorer in this season's edition after amassing 776 runs for the Rajasthan Royals -- a tally which included one century and five fifties.India, however, decided they could do without him in the first of two T20 internationals against Ireland at Stormont, only to fall well short of a target of 183 as they were dismissed for 148 with seven balls to spare.Abhishek Sharma top-scored for the tourists with 49 at the top of the order but no other India batsman made more than Shivam Dube's 25.Ireland debutant Matt Hollard (3-28) and left-arm spinner Matthew Humphreys (3-38), who opened the bowling, did the bulk of the damage as Ireland's men enjoyed their first win over India in any format.India-born Jai Moondra, another Ireland debutant, took 2-26 after removing Sanju Samson with his first delivery in international cricket.Earlier, Ireland captain Lorcan Tucker led from the front with 50 and Gareth Delany made 49 in the hosts' total of 182-9 in their full 20 overs.The teams return to Stormont for the series finale on Sunday. BRIEF SCORES Ireland 182 for 9 (Tucker 50, Delany 49, Rana 3-24) beat India 148 (Abhishek 49, Hollard 3-28, Moondra 2-26) by 34 runs

Cooper Connolly struck a rapid-fire 47 off 27 balls to steer Australia to a four-wicket win over Bangladesh in the opening T20 international on Wednesday.Australia chased down 132 with 10 balls to spare, finishing on 133-6 in 18.2 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.Connolly anchored the chase after early setbacks, hitting four fours and three sixes before falling three runs short of a maiden half-century.Bangladesh made early inroads as Shoriful Islam dismissed Josh Inglis for five before Mustafizur Rahman removed Mitchell Marsh for 13, leaving Australia at 38-2 inside five overs.Connolly rebuilt the innings in a 40-run third-wicket stand with Tim David, who made 20 before falling to Mehidy Hasan.Connolly then pushed Australia towards the target before he was caught attempting a six off debutant Abdul Gaffar Saqlain.Australia stumbled again as Matt Renshaw and debutant Nikhil Chaudhary both fell for 18, with Saqlain and Rishad Hossain striking to keep Bangladesh in the contest.But debutant Joel Davies and Xavier Bartlett saw the visitors home in 18.2 overs, finishing unbeaten on seven and four respectively.Davies said Australia's bowlers had adapted their plans to the venue's dimensions."Here in Bangladesh, the grounds are a fair bit smaller than in Australia, so if there were any parts of the ground that were slightly bigger, I had to use that to my advantage," he said after the match.Saqlain returned 2-32, while Shoriful, Mustafizur, Mehidy and Rishad took one wicket each. AUSTRALIA'S SPINNERS DOMINATEEarlier, Australia's spinners dominated as Bangladesh were bowled out for 131 after electing to bat.Adam Zampa (3-18) and Davies (3-17) led the attack, with Australia's spinners taking nine wickets, the most by Australian spin bowlers in a T20I innings.Bangladesh lost momentum after a brisk powerplay, finishing with only 131 despite reaching 52 in six overs.Mehidy top-scored with an unbeaten 29, while stand-in captain Towhid Hridoy, captain in place of the injured Litton Das, made eight.Bangladesh pace bowling coach Talha Jubair said the hosts failed to build on a promising powerplay."Our powerplay was excellent, we scored 52 in six overs, but from there we could not carry on," he said."We went too far for boundaries when we could have built a partnership. We lost three wickets between overs seven and 15, where we needed to build our innings," he said. BRIEF SCORESAustralia 133 for 6 (Connolly 47, David 20, Saqlain 2-32) beat Bangladesh 131 (Mahedi 29*, Davies 3-17, Zampa 3-18) by four wickets

Women's cricket showpiece can co-exist with football World Cup, says ICC chief

International Cricket Council chief executive Sanjog Gupta, insists the Women's T20 World Cup can "co-exist" with the football World Cup.England opened the cricket showpiece on home soil with an 87-run rout of Sri Lanka on Friday in front of 14,865 fans at Edgbaston.England's female football and rugby teams enjoyed public acclaim for their success at the European Championships and Rugby World Cup in recent years.But their cricketing counterparts are going for glory at a time when the sporting landscape is being dominated by the men's football World Cup in North America.Gupta says ticket sales for the three-week event reaching around 220,000 before a ball had been bowled, by far a tournament record, suggests the women's event can hold public interest."We genuinely see this event as a seminal moment for the sport," Gupta said. "I think the World Cups can co-exist. We've not seen any impact on ticket sales."If anything, the ticket sales have been stronger than ever, which is why we're at a point where we've sold more tickets than any previous edition of the Women's T20 World Cup."Our attendance numbers are tracking in the manner that we expected them to and the projections are for them to touch 300,000. If the weather holds up then we will have a fantastic tournament which will stand in its own right."We've seen tremendous acceleration in the growth of women's cricket to an extent where we now believe this event could potentially be one of the two biggest women's sporting events ever. It is not in any way being played in the shadow of the FIFA Men's World Cup."

Zaman gets 2-match ban for ball tampering

Pakistan international Fakhar Zaman has been banned for two matches after being found guilty of ball tampering during the country’s showpiece T20 league, cricket bosses said Tuesday.The 35-year-old opener was seen on video footage altering the condition of the ball during his team Lahore Qalandars’ match against Karachi Kings in Lahore on Sunday night.“Zaman has been suspended for two Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches after he was found guilty of a Level 3 offence for tampering the ball,” the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said in a statement.The PCB charged Zaman, who denied ball tampering, at a disciplinary hearing with match referee Roshan Mahanama of Sri Lanka.Mahanama viewed television footage which showed Qalandars’ players Zaman, skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf, and umpire Faisal Afridi inspecting the condition of the ball.The umpire awarded five penalty runs against Qalandars, who lost the match by four wickets.Earlier, fast bowler Naseem Shah was slapped with the biggest fine in Pakistan cricket history after criticising a politician on social media.Shah’s whopping $71,500 punishment is the latest incident to rock the PSL during a turbulent opening week.Fellow fast bowler Shaheen was also fined $3,500 for breaking the tournament’s tight security protocols.The PSL is taking place behind closed doors without fans - and only at two venues instead of six - because of fuel supply concerns caused by the Iran war.Naseem, who plays for Rawalpindiz, aimed a barb at Punjab chief minister Maryam Nawaz, who was the guest of honour at a slimmed-down PSL opening ceremony before last Thursday’s match between Qalandars and Hyderabad Kingsmen.In a post on X, swiftly deleted after being widely shared, Naseem mocked Nawaz’s arrival, saying: “Why is she treated like the Queen at Lord’s?”He later claimed his account had been hacked, but the PCB did not agree and ordered him to appear before a three-man disciplinary committee.Naseem apologised before the committee imposed the record fine.Afridi was fined by the Qalandars for breaching security protocols at his team hotel in Lahore, one of two host cities along with Karachi for this year’s tournament.Punjab Police said Afridi was refused permission to take visitors to teammate Sikander Raza’s room but did so anyway.

Struggling Buttler ready to continue England career

Jos Buttler is refusing to accept his England career is over despite admitting he had a “poor tournament” at the recent T20 World Cup. Widely regarded as one of the outstanding white-ball batsmen of his generation, Buttler managed just 87 runs in eight innings at the tournament as England reached the semi-finals before losing to co-hosts and eventual champions India. “Obviously I had a poor tournament, which is disappointing,” Buttler, who remains on an England and Wales central contract, said on his For the Love of Cricket podcast with former England fast bowler Stuart Broad. “But I have been playing some of the best cricket of my (career) in recent years, so hopefully I can get back to playing my best. “I certainly have ambitions (to play for England again), but no longer being a captain, I am not a selector and whatever, so what will be, will be.” Buttler, 35, is set to play for Gujarat Titans in the upcoming Indian Premier League and hopes time away after the World Cup “up the mountains” in France with his family will leave him feeling reinvigorated. “I couldn’t have been further away from cricket, which for me at the time was just perfect,” said Buttler. “It is exactly what I needed.” “Obviously the tournament didn’t go personally how I would have liked it to go, and I just felt like I needed some space from cricket and not to think about the game, and I could not have been further away from cricket where I was in that week.” Buttler, a member of England’s 2019 one-day international World Cup-winning team and also the skipper for their T20 triumph in Australia three years later, added: “It was really refreshing - I really enjoyed it, a complete sort of release, and slowly but surely, I would say at the start of this week, (I am) just starting to reflect a bit and have a few thoughts about what is important to me and my cricket, and why it probably didn’t go quite as I would’ve liked. “There’s elements that I actually don’t really know exactly,” he said. “For all your best intentions and hard work and efforts to perform, it just didn’t work, and sometimes that is OK as well.“That is something I have had to realise. It wasn’t for a lack of effort, it just didn’t quite happen.”
