HH Consort of HH the Amir Sheikha Jowaher bint Hamad bin Suhaim al-Thani Tuesday patronised the graduation ceremony for the 49th cohort of Qatar University students. The event, held at the university's Sports and Events Complex, celebrated the achievements of 3,122 female graduates across undergraduate and postgraduate programs.  During the ceremony, Her Highness Sheikha Jowaher honoured 525 outstanding students for their academic excellence. Degrees were formally conferred by His Excellency the university's president, Dr Omar al-Ansari.  The proceedings included speeches by Dr al-Ansari and a graduate representative, Majd Jaber al-Marri, who addressed attendees on behalf of the graduating class.  The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Their Excellencies sheikhs, ministers and members of the university's board of trustees, as well as senior academic officials and families of the graduates.  The graduation marks a significant milestone for one of Qatar's leading higher education institutions as it continues to expand its academic offerings and student body.

The College of Law at Qatar University recently hosted a seminar titled ‘Arbitration in Qatar: The Role of the Qatar International Centre for Conciliation and Arbitration in Establishing an Effective Arbitration Environment’. During the event, QICCA vice-chairman Sheikh Dr Thani bin Ali al-Thani, QICCA secretary general Ibrahim Shahbek, and general counsel Khaled al-Garhi delivered presentations in the presence of Qatar University vice president Dr Mona al-Marzouqi, and College of Law dean Dr Mohammed Hassan al-Kaabi, as well as law professors and legal experts in the country. The event, moderated by Dr Mohamed Salim Abu al-Faraj, focused on the historical development of arbitration in Qatar and the role of QICCA in promoting and strengthening the culture of arbitration in the country. It also reviewed the key features of QICCA’s Arbitration Rules for 2024. Discussions further highlighted the state’s support for arbitration and the judiciary’s role in facilitating and reinforcing arbitration processes in Qatar. Sheikh Dr Thani reviewed the development of arbitration in Qatar, noting its shift from individual practices to an integrated legislative framework aligned with international best practices.He stressed that this development has enhanced investor confidence and strengthened Qatar’s position as an attractive investment destination, adding that arbitration offers a faster, more flexible, and confidential alternative to judicial proceedings. Shahbek reviewed the establishment of QICCA, noting that it was created to meet market needs for an institutional body specialised in managing and settling commercial disputes.He added that the centre provides arbitration and conciliation services in line with the highest standards, while also promoting arbitration culture through seminars, workshops, training programmes, and partnerships with local and international entities, thereby enhancing awareness of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. 

Qatar University (QU), represented by the University Core Curriculum Program at the Deanship of General Studies, organised a specialised virtual seminar titled “Google AI Technologies: Overview and Practical Applications” via WebEx, featuring participation from experts at Google. The seminar was delivered by Taymour Narch, cloud solutions engineer, and Richard Hitti, artificial intelligence engineer, who presented a comprehensive overview of the transformative impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) on today’s technological landscape. The session highlighted the growing role of AI in accelerating digital transformation and fostering innovation across sectors. During the seminar, Narch emphasised the importance of integrating artificial intelligence with cloud computing services, noting how individuals and institutions can leverage Google Cloud platforms to enhance efficiency and drive digital innovation. He also introduced the concept of “data democratisation,” explaining how modern tools enable non-specialists to develop intelligent applications without requiring advanced programming expertise. This, he noted, opens new opportunities for student creativity and interdisciplinary innovation. Hitti presented practical examples of AI applications in code generation and content creation, underscoring the importance for students and developers to understand and utilise these tools to improve operational efficiency and productivity. The seminar addressed several key themes, including Google’s “AI-first” approach and the development of advanced language models that contribute to solving complex challenges. Speakers also highlighted the growing importance of AI technologies in cloud computing and big data analytics, positioning them as key drivers of innovation in modern work environments. The session witnessed strong engagement from participants, with discussions focusing on the ethical implications of artificial intelligence, corporate responsibility in addressing algorithmic bias, and the future of jobs in an AI-driven world. 

Qatar University’s CubeSat programme, after the launch of its first nanosatellite QUbeSat1 in January, is transitioning into a more advanced phase centred on scientific research and satellite capability development. Dr Tamer Khattab, professor of Electrical Engineering and Project Lead, said that: “The project is moving toward a new phase that combines practical education with advanced scientific research,” adding that “future satellites will be more complex, with defined scientific objectives including hyperspectral imaging and experiments on plant growth in microgravity.” He further stressed that “The upcoming satellites will be larger, up to six units, with advanced sensors to enable precise scientific experiments, including monitoring space debris using machine learning,” signaling a clear shift from a purely educational model to a research-driven satellite programme. The initial satellite served primarily as a training platform, but the project is now expanding into targeted scientific applications. He noted: “The first CubeSat launch was purely educational, but upcoming satellites will have specific scientific missions such as environmental monitoring and plant experiments in space.” Dr Khalid Abualsaud, Lecturer of Computer Engineering at Qatar University, explained: “We developed an integrated system to monitor and analyse waste through image capture and data transmission to the ground station,” adding that “this system will be integrated into the second satellite with advanced sensors to enhance environmental applications.” These developments underline the project’s growing emphasis on data-driven research and environmental monitoring from space. Noura Hossam Saqr, Electrical Engineering Graduate from QU, highlighted operational parameters: “The satellite can communicate with the ground station four times daily for 8 to 10 minutes each pass,” noting that “the station receives images and data that are processed and analysed using advanced systems.” Mohamed Elsayed, teaching assistant in Electrical Engineering, said: “The project started as a simple idea to transfer knowledge in satellite design and launch,” adding that “students participated in designing and installing the ground station, gaining integrated practical experience.” This integration of satellite and ground systems ensures continuous data flow and strengthens the project’s applied research dimension. From a broader project perspective, the initiative is designed to build long-term scientific and technical capacity. Dr Abdelmagid Hammuda, professor of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Project Team Member, said that: “The project is not just a launch, but an integrated effort to build a solid scientific culture in space engineering,” stressing that “the real success lies in building a qualified team capable of developing new satellites in shorter timeframes.” The technical backbone of the satellites is also evolving. Dr Ahmed Massoud, associate dean for Research and Graduate Studies, noted: “Solar energy systems are critical to ensure continuous satellite operation and data transmission in space conditions,” highlighting the importance of reliable power systems for sustained mission performance. Dr Nizar Zorba, professor of Electrical Engineering, pointed out that : “The launch is not the end of the project, but the beginning of a new phase requiring continuous evaluation to improve performance and maximise scientific and economic value,” adding that “the next phase will focus on developing new technologies and building an advanced communication system integrating space and ground components.” 

Qatar University (QU), through its Social and Economic Survey Research Institute, is conducting a nationwide study titled 'Baseline Study to Estimate Food Loss and Waste in Qatar 2025' in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality. The study supports national efforts to improve food system efficiency while strengthening sustainability and food security nationwide.The study aims to measure the scale of food loss and waste across the various stages of the food supply chain in the country, beginning with production and processing and extending through distribution and consumption. The project will provide accurate scientific data by strengthening institutional collaboration among key national stakeholders, particularly QU and the Ministry of Municipality.This collaboration supports unified efforts, enhances co-ordination among institutions, and assists policymakers in developing strategies and programs to reduce food loss and waste while improving resource efficiency. Work on the project began on November 17, 2024 and is expected to continue until September 2026.The study is being implemented through a comprehensive research methodology that relies on collecting and analysing data from multiple sources to develop a reliable knowledge base to support strategic planning for food security and sustainability in Qatar.In this context, Dr Noora al-Mannai, director of the SESRI, emphasised the importance of the study, stating, “This study represents one of the key national research initiatives aligned with QU’s research priorities, particularly in the areas of sustainability, environmental protection, and food security." It also reflects the importance of collaboration among national institutions in generating knowledge and exchanging research expertise to support evidence-based policymaking.The project gains additional value through partnerships with relevant international organizations, such as the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and the United Nations Environment Programme, which enhance the quality of the research outputs and connect them to global efforts aimed at reducing food loss and waste and advancing sustainable development.”Dr Elmogiera Elawad, section head of Field Operations at SESRI, noted that the study adopts a comprehensive field-based methodology covering the entire food supply chain. This includes food production at farms, marketing and retail stages, food services in restaurants, hotels, and hospitals, and ultimately household consumption. This comprehensive coverage aims to provide an accurate assessment of food loss and waste at different stages through quantitative measurement, while also examining individuals’ attitudes, behaviours, and practices related to food waste and agricultural loss. The study will contribute to building a reliable scientific database that supports the development of effective interventions and policies to address this issue. 

Under the patronage of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, Qatar University (QU) will hold its Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2026 (male students) on May 4, 2026.In a statement on Monday, QU said the graduation ceremony for distinguished female students will be held on May 5, in the presence of HH Consort of HH the Amir Sheikha Jowaher bint Hamad bin Suhaim Al-Thani.The total number of graduates this year is expected to be around 3,980 graduates, including 3,110 female graduates and 870 male graduates.As it celebrates the graduation of its 49th cohort, QU continues to build on a decades-long legacy of contributing to Qatar's development by supplying the labor market with highly qualified graduates.The university noted that its current strategy focuses on enhancing the quality of graduates while strengthening its position as a leading higher education institution in Qatar and the region.QU reaffirmed its commitment to delivering high-quality education in fields aligned with national priorities, supporting the country's transition toward a knowledge-based economy. 

Qatar University (QU) has discussed ways to ensure the continuity of education and research during current circumstances, reviewing the procedures and operational plans that guarantee the efficient continuation of academic programs and research activities.  During its Executive Management Committee (EMC) meeting, chaired by QU president Dr Omar al-Ansari, the committee stressed the importance of supporting students, faculty members, and researchers, as well as maintaining the quality of educational and research outputs.  The committee also emphasised the necessity of providing the necessary digital learning environment to ensure the uninterrupted continuation of the academic process. 

The Core Curriculum Programme at the Deanship of General Studies at Qatar University (QU) organised an initiative titled “Made in Qatar: National Pride and Sustainable Value” at the College of Business and Economics building, featuring 55 booths — 40 in the female section and 15 in the male section.The initiative aimed to raise community awareness about the importance of supporting Qatari industries and products, highlighting their role in advancing sustainable development and fostering a culture of social responsibility within the university community.The initiative was organised through the collaborative efforts of students enrolled in the Leadership, Innovation and Civic Engagement and the Community Service Learning courses, reflecting QU’s commitment to linking academic outcomes with practical application and empowering students to actively contribute to national priority areas.The organising committee announced that all profits from the initiative would be allocated to support students facing financial difficulties in paying tuition fees, in accordance with a permit issued by the Regulatory Authority for Charitable Activities. This step reflects the values of social solidarity and institutional cohesion that QU strives to cultivate within its community.Dr Ali Fetais, director of the Core Curriculum Programme stated, “This initiative demonstrates our students’ ability to develop solutions that strengthen the nation’s economic identity while upholding the values of social solidarity. Their engagement in organising the ‘Made in Qatar’ initiative reflects a strong awareness of national sustainability priorities and translates academic learning outcomes into tangible impact that serves the university community and supports their peers’ academic journeys.”Participating students emphasised that the initiative provided a practical opportunity to enhance their leadership and organisational skills while bridging theory with real-world application. Asmaa al-Sulaiti noted that the event focused on supporting Qatari businesses and directing proceeds to the student support fund, adding that the course broadened her perspective in volunteer and research engagement.Salem al-Marri highlighted that supporting national products is fundamental to strengthening the economy and achieving self-sufficiency, emphasising that participation increased students’ awareness of the role of local industry in advancing sustainability.The accompanying activities focused on demonstrating the advancement and competitiveness of Qatari industries while also highlighting the positive economic and environmental impact of supporting local production. The initiative witnessed strong attendance from students and faculty members, who commended the level of organisation and its alignment with academic objectives and national priorities. 

The Qatar International Centre for Conciliation and Arbitration (QICCA) at Qatar Chamber, in cooperation with the Community Service and Continuing Education Centre at Qatar University, has concluded the first edition of its specialised training programme for 2026 titled ‘Qualification and Preparation of Arbitrators’. The programme aimed to equip Qatari professionals and residents working in the country with practical and legal expertise in the field of commercial arbitration. QICCA vice-chairman Sheikh Dr Thani bin Ali al-Thani attended the closing ceremony held at the College of Law at Qatar University. Following the completion of the final stage, titled ‘Practical Mock Trial’, Sheikh Thani presented certificates to 24 trainees from various governmental, semi-governmental, and private entities. The programme comprised five stages covering key topics, including the concept and practical applications of commercial arbitration, case management procedures from the arbitrator’s perspective, and the drafting of arbitration awards. It concluded with a practical training session featuring a mock arbitration exercise involving all participants.
