QCS concludes thyroid cancer awareness campaign

Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) has concluded its thyroid cancer awareness campaign, which ran throughout April as part of its ongoing efforts to raise community awareness and highlight the importance of prevention and early detection as essential pillars in reducing incidence rates and improving treatment outcomes. Thyroid cancer is the third most common cancer in Qatar and affects women at three times the rate of men, according to the Qatar National Cancer Registry (QNCR 2021). The campaign featured a series of in-person and virtual awareness activities targeting various segments of the community. It focused on promoting awareness of preventive measures, warning signs, and risk factors associated with thyroid cancer, while encouraging individuals to undergo regular medical check-ups as part of early detection efforts. As part of the campaign, QCS organised a panel discussion at its headquarters titled “Thyroid Health Keys: What You Need to Know,” in collaboration with Life Care Clinic and WellCare Pharmacies. The session was moderated by Heba Nassar, head of Community Health Awareness at QCS, and featured a distinguished group of speakers, including Dr Tania Jaber, consultant endocrinologist at Hamad Medical Corporation; Dr Mona Salem, dermatology and aesthetic specialist at Life Care Clinic; Dr Minas El-Sharkawy, integrative coach and behavioural change trainer; and Batool Ibrahim, clinical dietitian at QCS, who shared valuable insights on thyroid health from medical, nutritional, and behavioural perspectives. The Society also reinforced the campaign through intensive media and digital outreach across multiple platforms, providing educational content and media coverage to expand reach and enhance public awareness. This integrated approach helped ensure that key health messages were accessible to a broader audience. Mona al-Ashkanani, general manager of QCS, stated that organising such initiatives reflects the Society’s ongoing commitment to promoting health awareness and emphasising the importance of early detection, which plays a crucial role in improving recovery rates, especially with the rising incidence of thyroid cancer. She added that QCS continues to utilise diverse awareness channels and values partnerships with healthcare and media entities to achieve a sustainable impact in cancer prevention and awareness. At the conclusion of the campaign, the Society reaffirmed the importance of regular medical check-ups as a key method for early detection and improved recovery outcomes, urging community members to prioritise their health and adopt healthier lifestyles. Nassar stated that thyroid cancer begins in the thyroid gland, which regulates vital body functions such as metabolism, heart rate, and body temperature, and emphasised the importance of paying attention to unusual changes in the body. She noted that symptoms may include a lump or swelling in the front of the neck, pain that may extend to the ears, persistent hoarseness, difficulty swallowing or breathing, and an unexplained cough, stressing that consulting a doctor is essential even though these symptoms may be linked to other conditions. She added that risk factors include gender, age, genetic predisposition, radiation exposure, overweight and obesity, and iodine imbalance, highlighting that maintaining a healthy lifestyle and balanced nutrition play a key role in prevention. Nassar said treatment options vary depending on the case and may include surgery, radioactive iodine therapy, hormone therapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and, in some cases, chemotherapy.

Renad observes Autism Awareness Day

Renad Academy — a part of Qatar Foundation’s Pre-University Education — organised a special event marking World Autism Awareness Day, aimed at raising community awareness, celebrating the abilities of students with autism, and strengthening the role of community partnerships in supporting and empowering them. The event, held at the academy’s campus, brought together parents, specialists, and representatives of partner entities, alongside students, in an interactive environment that provided opportunities to exchange expertise, highlight inclusive educational practices, and strengthen communication across different segments of the community. The event also featured distinguished student performances by Renad Academy students, showcasing their diverse talents and creative abilities. These performances ranged from artistic displays and interactive activities to expressive segments through which students confidently expressed themselves, reflecting their potential and highlighting their unique strengths. The event also shed light on Renad’s innovative educational approach, including diverse teaching methods and varied communication strategies aimed at empowering students. On this occasion, Noof al-Malki, director of Renad Academy, said: “On World Autism Awareness Day, we reaffirm that this day is not merely an annual event, but a profound human message that we believe in at Renad Academy and strive to embody in our daily practices. We do not view autism solely as a challenge; rather, we see it as a rich form of diversity that carries unique abilities and remarkable potential that deserve to be understood, embraced, and nurtured.” Al-Malki emphasised that education extends beyond academic skills to include character development, fostering independence, and building life skills, enabling students to become active and valued members of their community. “This day reminds us that educational environments can be the greatest challenge for students with autism, yet at the same time they represent the greatest opportunity to make a difference. This drives us to create flexible, supportive, and inclusive environments that open pathways to excellence and create a lasting impact in our students’ lives. “We also aspire to achieve true inclusion not only within the school, but beyond it, recognising that empowerment is a shared responsibility across all sectors of society.” “Success cannot be achieved without a genuine partnership with parents, who form the cornerstone of our students’ journey. Through this collaboration, we build bridges of trust and create a lasting impact,” she emphasised. “Each year, we renew our commitment to raising awareness and promoting a culture of acceptance and inclusion, because our communities thrive when they embrace difference and value diversity.” The event also recognised a number of community partners in appreciation of their continued contributions and their active role in supporting educational initiatives and programs aimed at enhancing the inclusion of students with autism in society.

New publications spotlight media responsibility at Siraj cultural event

A cultural event in Doha highlighted the evolving role of media in society, as Mohammed bin Salhan al-Marri launched two books exploring public awareness and media responsibility.The thought-provoking gathering hosted by Siraj Cultural Club in Doha brought together readers, media professionals and intellectuals, where a book signing event under the theme “When Thought Meets the Reader was organised.” The event featured the launch of two new publications by media professional and author Mohammed bin Salhan al-Marri, titled Security Media and Before We Listen, both of which explore the complex relationship between media and its audience. Speaking at the event, al-Marri, who serves as the editor-in-chief of Darna Press, emphasised the importance of understanding how audiences interact with modern media. “Both books talk about the relationship between the recipient and the media, and how they deal with these means, how they understand them, how they interact with them,” he said. The book Before We Listen delves into the behaviour and perception of media consumers—highlighting the growing need for critical engagement in an age of information overload. Meanwhile, Security Media focuses on the relationship between media institutions and military bodies, examining how both sectors intersect in shaping public understanding. “Security Media talks about the concepts and practices that exist between the military institutions and the media in understanding this comprehensive relationship,” al-Marri explained, noting that society remains a shared space influenced by both. The event formed part of broader efforts by Siraj Cultural Club to enrich Qatar’s cultural landscape and encourage dialogue between writers and the public. Attendees were given the opportunity to engage directly with the author, reflecting the event’s aim of bridging the gap between thought and readership. At the core of al-Marri’s work lies a strong emphasis on responsibility within the media sector. “I started from the media responsibility that we have towards the society,” he said, underlining the ethical role of media in shaping awareness and public discourse. The discussion also touched on the evolving challenges facing media professionals today, particularly in balancing information delivery with societal impact. Through his publications, al-Marri seeks to prompt reflection on how media messages are produced, interpreted and consumed. As Qatar continues to position itself as a hub for cultural and intellectual exchange, such initiatives highlight the importance of literature and dialogue in addressing contemporary issues. By bringing together ideas, voices and audiences, the evening underscored a simple yet powerful message: meaningful engagement with media begins not just with listening, but with understanding.

More than 100 win Qatar Scientific Excellence Award 2026

Qatar's Ministry of Education and Higher Education has announced the winners of the Qatar Scientific Excellence Award 2026, with 108 candidates selected from a total of 371 applicants.The results were approved by the award's Board of Trustees, chaired by Her Excellency Minister of Education and Higher Education Lolwah bint Rashid AlKhater. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Maryam Abdullah al-Muhannadi, the award's chief executive, said the number of winners reflected strong competition and the high quality of submissions, as well as growing awareness of the award's criteria and standards.She said the results showed a notable diversity in the educational institutions represented by the winners, including students from public, private and specialised schools, as well as civilian and military universities and colleges. This, she added, highlighted the spread of a culture of excellence across Qatar's education sector.Al-Muhannadi noted that the overall success rate was in line with the average of the past five editions, underlining the consistency of the evaluation methodology. She also pointed to the role of supportive family environments, saying that in some cases more than one member of the same family had won, in accordance with the award's criteria.She stressed that only candidates who achieved the required scores were selected, following a comprehensive assessment process that included file reviews and interviews, ensuring fairness, transparency and equal opportunities.Congratulating the winners, al-Muhannadi said this year's edition had attracted strong interest and high-quality participation, reinforcing the award's status as a national platform that promotes excellence, quality and innovation. She also praised candidates who were not selected, saying that applying for the award itself demonstrated ambition and a commitment to excellence.The main award ceremony will be held under the patronage of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, on Feb 15, 2026, marking 20 years since the launch of the award. The award aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030, particularly its human development pillar, by investing in national talent and fostering an educational environment that supports creativity, innovation and sustainable development.

From voices to impact: 10 years of women leading change in Qatar

DWF redefining what it means to lead, connect and transform societyConversations around women’s empowerment in Qatar have moved from awareness to action over the past decade, as participants increasingly seek to contribute through initiatives and collaborations rather than simply listen, says Doha Women Forum (DWF) founder Conchita Ponce. Marking 10 years since the launch of DWF in 2015, she told Gulf Times that the platform has evolved well beyond its original purpose, reflecting broader social and professional shifts in the country. “What began as a small gathering where women shared challenges and inspired one another through personal success stories has grown into a movement rooted in participation, contribution, and impact,” she said. In its early years, Ponce noted that the forum focused heavily on storytelling as a way to inspire confidence and spark conversation. While that element remains important, Ponce stressed that the mission has clearly shifted. “The Forum has transitioned from inspiration to action. Women are no longer just attendees, they are active participants and contributors to a shared cause,” she pointed out.Ponce said that members of the DWF community are now leading or supporting concrete initiatives, including training sessions, workshops and an upcoming mentorship programme. “These opportunities directly empower other women,” she said, adding that the focus is increasingly on practical support and skills-building rather than dialogue alone.According to Ponce, that evolution has also changed how the forum is viewed by institutions and stakeholders. “Today, DWF is known not only for hosting annual events, but for producing tangible outcomes. Institutions now engage with DWF as a partner rather than merely a platform, and the forum has become a recognised reference point in women-related discourse in Qatar.” Ponce says the impact of the forum can be seen across different levels of participation. “We have seen speakers grow and thrive after being part of the Forum, attendees connect with the right people and platforms, and women-led businesses gain visibility and opportunities for growth,” she said. “These outcomes reflect a clear shift toward influence, collaboration, and real-world results.” She explained that DWF’s “core objective is to empower women through meaningful dialogue”. She underlined the importance of helping women recognise their potential, understand their rights and access strong professional networks that enable growth and leadership. Ponce acknowledged that Qatar has undergone significant change since the forum’s inception, crediting the country’s leadership for creating new opportunities for women.“Qatar has changed tremendously, largely due to the visionary leadership of Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser. Her strong commitment to education, human development, and women’s empowerment has expanded opportunities for women across leadership, entrepreneurship, and the workforce,” she said. As a result, she said, Qatar is now recognised as one of the leading countries in the GCC and the wider Middle East and North Africa region in advancing women’s empowerment.Looking at how conversations around empowerment have evolved, Ponce said they have become “more open, real, and impactful” over time. “With each edition of DWF, awareness has grown, and more importantly, people have moved from listening to actively wanting to be involved and contribute,” she said. While she acknowledged that translating dialogue into policy takes time, Ponce said she remains optimistic: “When you give people space to engage honestly, minds begin to shift, and once that happens, action naturally follows. We are laying the right foundations through continued conversation, collaboration, and steady progress.”

QCS, Fine Hygienic Holding ink pact

The Qatar Cancer Society (QCS), in collaboration with Fine Hygienic Holding (FHH), has announced the signing of an agreement to support the awareness campaigns dedicated to raising awareness of men’s cancers. This partnership aligns with the QCS’s mission to promote health education, preventive practices, and early detection through regular screening. The collaboration brings together the QCS’s experience in delivering specialised health campaigns and the FHH’s 67-year legacy of supporting public health and providing innovative wellness products that encourage healthy lifestyles. It also reflects the shared commitment of both organisations to strengthening community engagement through sustainable social responsibility initiatives. “The Qatar market is important to us and we are proud to support the QCS in its ongoing efforts to raise awareness of men’s cancers,” said FHH chief executive Maurizio Patarnello. “Our collaboration reflects shared values centred on promoting health, encouraging preventative action, and empowering communities to adopt healthier lifestyles.” He added that the partnership aligns with FHH’s the corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy, which prioritises supporting civil society and promoting cancer awareness to create a lasting, positive impact. “We value our partnership with Fine Hygienic Holding, which enhances our efforts during Men’s Cancer Awareness Month,” said QCS general manager Mona Ashkanani. “Such collaborations help us expand the reach of our educational messages and strengthen awareness about prevention and early detection, allowing us better to support patients, survivors, and their families.” She emphasised that partnerships like this are essential to the QCS’s work in promoting health awareness and providing integrated programmes, including education, psychological support, financial assistance, and contributions to scientific research in cancer control.
