The Ministry of Interior has signed an agreement with the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Co-operation (Europol) in the area of security co-operation and combatting the organised crime.
Director of the Ministry of Interior’s Human Resources Department, Major-General Khalifa Nasr al-Nasr, signed the agreement for Qatar while Europol executive director Catherine de Bolle signed in behalf of the European agency.
The agreement aims to boost security co-operation between Qatar and the EU member states through a secure system to share information, linking Qatar with the law enforcement agencies in the EU and several other countries, and EU organisations.
The agreement also aims to enhance the co-operation among the parties to share security, technical, and technological information and expertise.
Under the agreement, the parties shall boost the co-operation in the area of upgrading systems, provide the mutual assistance to counter serious cross-border organised crimes, and support co-operation and co-ordination in the field of security.
Major-General al-Nasr outlined that the signing of this agreement comes within the framework of the directives of HE Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz al-Thani, adding that such levels of co-operation will play a crucial role in determining the priorities when handling cross-border organised crimes that affect both Europol and Qatar.
De Bolle said that the fruitful co-operation between the law enforcement agencies Qatar and their counterparts in the EU will start right away.
The agreement will allow Qatar to appoint a liaison officer to operate from the Europol headquarters in the Netherlands.
