A delegation from the Co-operation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC) and the GCC General-Secretariat visited the Domestic Solid Waste Management Centre (DSWMC) in Mesaieed on an invitation from Qatar to the GCC Co-ordination and Follow-up Committee in the field of municipal work during its 39th meeting in April.
The visit was intended to brief the delegation on the centre’s potential and to mark its winning of the GCC prize in the field of municipal work at its fourth session in the category of the project of waste treatment and conversion into a source of energy, and to introduce Qatar’s experience in the field of waste recycling and treatment, including the operation phases at the centre.
Assistant Director of Waste Recycling and Treatment Department at the Ministry of Municipality Hassan al-Nasr paid tribute to DSWMC for winning the GCC Prize in the field of municipal work, where the centre offers sustainable environmental solutions for waste treatment and conversion into energy, fertiliser, in addition to supplying the General Electricity & Water Corp with power energy contributing to the process of comprehensive development and renaissance being witnessed by Qatar. He clarified that DSWMC receives domestic, green and animal wastes from the relay stations of the Department of Waste Recycling and Treatment, which are subsequently distributed across Qatar.
He pointed out that the centre offers sustainable environmental solutions to treat these wastes, which are primarily recycled to produce energy and fertiliser, and to be further utilised in public parks, streets, and for beautification projects in Qatar. He said these are distributed freely to citizens, which contribute to achieving the strategy of waste recycling and treatment, and in developing sustainability across Qatar.
Hassan al-Nasr added that the centre is one of the largest waste treatment centres in the Middle East region and offers a unique experience to utilise and acquire experiences in the area of waste recycling and treatment, with their various types and achieves effective outcomes in reduction of costs, environmental and health risks.
During the visit, engineer Jawaher al-Sulaiti, from the waste recycling and treatment department, made a presentation on the Al Afja area for recycling industries and an introductory presentation on the Domestic Solid Waste Management Centre. (QNA)
