The blood donation service of the Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) has called on all members of the community to donate blood to help people in need.
World Blood Donor Day takes place internationally on June 14 each year. The aim is to raise global awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products for transfusion and of the critical contribution of voluntary blood donors.
PHCC stressed that with the continuation of the Covid-19 pandemic, "raising awareness of the importance of blood donation is a basic and humane matter", QNA reported yesterday.
The corporation stressed that blood donation during the pandemic is safe and not a cause for concern, therefore everyone must be involved and encouraged to donate blood to avoid any shortage of stock.
PHCC explained that awareness-raising campaigns on the importance of donating blood have been organised on social media to highlight the importance of donating blood in saving lives and improving the health of others. PHCC will also organise a live broadcast by a family doctor to talk about blood donation and its benefits.
Besides, it will organise a blood donation campaign for its staff in co-ordination with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC)'s Qatar Blood Services.
Huda al-Wahidi, executive director of Corporate Communication at PHCC, said donating blood is a human gift, which contributes to saving many patients and the injured.
Al-Wahidi said safe blood and its transfusion is a critical aspect of care and public health as it contributes daily to saving millions of people around the world, improve the health of many patients, and improve their quality of life. She explained that cases of blood shortages are particularly acute in developing countries.
For her part, Dr Maryam Abdullah al-Maslamani, director of the Occupational Safety Department at PHCC, said the message and slogan of the celebration of World Blood Donor Day this year shed light on the contribution of blood donors, as it is "essential to maintaining the heartbeat of the world to save lives and improve the health of others".
She indicated that the focus of PHCC's campaign this year will focus on contributing to securing a safe blood supply by encouraging donation among the corporation's employees and also encouraging such initiatives among community members.
Both PHCC and HMC have called on eligible people to participate and donate to achieve sufficiency, as well as join the growing community of blood donors in Qatar by visiting www.hamad.qa/qbs for more information on how to donate.
