HE the Speaker of the Shura Council and Chairman of the Global Organisation of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (Gopac), Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid al-Mahmoud, inaugurated Sunday the organisation's General Secretariat Office in Qatar.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, HE the Speaker expressed his sincere appreciation to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani for his support for Gopac and all the great initiatives taken by the Amir in this field, including the initiative to establish Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Awards, which is awarded to distinguished people in this field each year, in conjunction with the celebration of the International Anti-Corruption Day, which is marked by the United Nations on December 9 of each year.
The Speaker pointed out that Qatar, under the leadership of His Highness the Amir, has attached great importance to combating corruption and is keen to support international efforts to enhance transparency, in addition it has taken additional steps to strengthen the institutional framework on integrity and transparency and to prevent crimes affecting public money or public office.
He said organising the opening ceremony of this office comes at an important time when parliamentarians must increase efforts to present creative initiatives and supervise the huge budgets allocated to combating Covid-19 and to stimulate the economy, and to ensure that monitoring exchange operations to contribute to serving the citizens and providing them with all means of decent living.
Furthermore, the parliamentarians all over the world have a great responsibility to play in preventing and combating corruption, as they are an essential part of the solution, he added.
HE al-Mahmoud also explained what GOPAC has accomplished since his election as its president, foremost among which is the preparation of a complete strategy for the goals that are supposed to be achieved in a period of two years and approved by the executive committee of the organisation, explaining that Their Excellencies heads of parliaments in the world continue the work to expand membership in the organization and establish new national and regional branches and help carry out its tasks.
He renewed the call of the international community to commit to its role, saying that the organisation, as the only international network of parliamentarians who have dedicated their work to prevent and combat corruption, renews its call to the international community to address the scourge of corruption and effectively implement its international commitments to combat it.
The virtual ceremony was attended by HE the Chairman of the Administrative Control and Transparency Authority Hamad bin Nasser al-Misnad, Their Excellencies members of the Executive Committee and members of the GOPAC, and HE President of the Arab branch of GOPAC Dr Nasser Jassim al-Sanea. Also, parliamentarians from all around the world attended the inauguration via videoconferencing.
