To support the initiative of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment Qatar, members of World Malayali Council (WMC) Qatar Province marked the 51st Earth Day recently by switching off non-essential lights, electrical and electronic household equipment from 8.30pm to 9.30pm, in celebration of Earth Hour.
Girish Kumar, former president of Indian Cultural Centre, spoke on the importance of the day, expressing gratitude to planet Earth for the abundance of care and compassion. He said that society is responsible and must act decisively to protect the planet from both the coronavirus and the existential threat of climate disruption.
The members of the forum shared their concerns regarding climate change, man-made changes to nature, and societal ignorance that have been disrupting biodiversity. The 2021 Earth Day calls for 24 hours of action, big and small, for people and the planet.
The Zoom meet, presided by President Girish Kumar, was attended by Forum Chairman V S Narayan, General Secretary Suresh Karyad, Treasurer John Gilbert, Joint Treasurer Binu Pillai, Women’s Forum President Kajal Moosa, Youth Wing President Fasil, and executive committee members – Abdul Raoof Kondotty, Faisal Moosa, Suresh Kumar, Simi, and Riyaz Babu.
