The celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of India's Independence Day were recently inaugurated in Qatar with a wide range of programmes. The 75 weeklong celebrations, collectively named by the Government of India as ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’, were officially started in Qatar by the embassy of India in association with the Indian Cultural Centre (ICC). Respecting Covid-19 safety protocols, the ceremony was limited to the embassy's high-ranking officials and ICC management committee members. Chief guest Dr Deepak Mittal, Indian ambassador, inaugurated the ceremony by lighting the traditional lamp followed by tree planting on the premises of ICC. The ceremony was followed by a virtual event where chief guest Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Hamar, director of the Asian Affairs Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Qatar, addressed the gathering along with the Indian ambassador. ICC streamed online the various cultural programmes in association with ICC-affiliated organisations that depicted the rich culture, heritage and festivals of India. Also, 75 people were given free ICBF life insurance and the fund was given to the ICBF officials by ICC.
