The Interprofessional Education Committee (IPEC) in Qatar University (QU), which is overseen by QU Health, organised the third Interprofessional Education (IPE) activity for the academic year 2020-2021. The virtual event aimed to teach students how to be an effective team player.
The activity saw the attendance of 137 students and 16 facilitators, from a variety of professions including medicine, dental medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy and rehabilitation sciences and public health.
This IPE activity aims to introduce the importance of team communication and decision making within the health care environment. This activity emphasised on the fact that all healthcare professions are equally important.
Lead facilitator, QU Health chair of Interprofessional Education Committee and assistant dean for student affairs, Dr Alla El Awaisi, welcomed attendees and introduced a short awareness video on how lack of communication among healthcare workers can affect patients. This was followed by an engaging activity and discussion for the students.
Dr Awaisi said, “We are committed to continue providing a valuable learning experience for our health care students. The demand for interprofessional working and being an effective team player has heightened during this pandemic.”
Third year medical student Nouran ElTantawi pointed out that IPE aims to develop and facilitate interactions between health care students from different institutions and to equip learners with team-based collaborative skills needed for them to practice interprofessionally upon graduation.
