The colours of Al Shaqab Racing were once again in the winners’ enclosure on Wednesday when their homebred Calgary won the Prix Daniel Vergez, a Class 2 race over 2,000m on the all-weather track at Marseille Pont de Vivaux in France. Trained by Frédéric Rossi, who is based in Marseille, the three-year-old gelding is now two from two, having won his only start as a two-year-old on the neighbouring track of Marseille-Borely.
Ridden by jockey Sylvain Ruis in this five-runner contest, Calgary settled in fourth position initially with a smart pace set by Paco. As the pace steadied in the first bend, Calgary moved in third position and up into second at the half-way point. They began racing in the final turn on this sharp track, with Calgary coming to join Paco, still in the lead. Once in the straight, he took the lead, and pulled clear in the final 100 meters to keep his unbeaten status, winning by a length and a half in front of Lepti Prinsadi, who just snatched second place from long-time leader Paco.
By Al Shaqab Racing sire Olympic Glory, Calgary in out of the winning mare Brezena, who also carried the Al Shaqab Racing silks. She has a 4-year-old filly by Toronado, Pomme D’amour, also a winner, and has a yearling filly also by Toronado.
