The Shura Council participated on Thursday in the regular meeting of the Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), that was held via video conference. The meeting focused on exchanging expertise in terms of the structural measures and policies adopted to overcome the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The meeting also discussed how parliaments can carry out their roles in light of the pandemic.
The Shura Council was represented in the meeting by HE Secretary-General of the Council Fahad bin Mubarak al-Khayareen, who reviewed the measures taken by the Shura Council to adapt with social distancing and other medical precautions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
He also praised the Shura Council's success in overcoming all obstacles by dividing Shura Council members into different halls and conducting sessions using video conference, while strictly adhering to all medical precautions for members and all employees in the council. The secretary-generals reviewed their own experiences in their countries, to enrich the exchange of expertise. Afterwards, there was a discussion on creating mechanisms on exchanging expertise during epidemics and pandemics.
The Shura Council also participated in the 27th session of the Executive Committee of Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (APU) meeting which was held via video conference. The participants discussed a number of reports and projects, the most important of which was the draft budget for 2021, and the draft agenda for the 31st conference of Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (APU). The Shura Council was represented in the session by HE Hadi bin Saeed al-Khayarin, member of the Council.
