Qatar’s Rashid Hamad kept his impressive form going in Cairo as he finished the first day in the second spot in the skeet at the ISSF Egypt World Cup for shotgun Wednesday.
Olympian Hamad shot a total of 73, missing a target each in the first two rounds and then shooting a perfect 25 in the third, at the Egyptian Shooting Club, located 15kms from the Pyramids of Giza.
The 2007 world champion and 2017 World Championship bronze medallist Georgios Achilleos of Cyprus also shot 73 but was ranked in the top spot on countback.
Mehelba Azmy of Egypt and Russia’s Cherkasov Vladimir were ranked third and fourth with the same total first day haul.

“It is a very important event for me and I am happy that I have a good day today. I am feeling good and I will try to keep the momentum going tomorrow,” said Rashid.
The 24-year-old Rashid, who won gold in the shotgun event in Rabat Grand Prix early this month, had been in good form in the local competitions and won a gold and silver besides a fourth-place finish in the Amir Cup and Qatar Shooting Association Cup recently.
It was a good day for Qatar as 2012 London Olympic Games bronze medal winner Nasser Saleh al-Attiyah was eighth on countback, having shot 72 in all.
The 50-year-old al-Attiyah, who has represented Qatar a record six times, missed three targets from the 75. The three-time Dakar Rally champion is now eyeing his seventh Olympics.
Seven others shot a 72 and were placed fifth to 12th on countback. Czech Republic’s Milos Slavicek and Tomas Nydrle were fifth and sixth, ahead of Denmark’s Jesper Hansen and al-Attiyah.
Spaniard Jose Maria Mielgo Moneo, Czech Jakub Tomecek rounded out the top 10, while Nikolay Pilshchikov of Russia and Jakub Werys of Poland were 11th and 12th.
Slovakia’s London 2012 bronze medallist Danka Bartekova leads the women’s skeet field going into day two, with a three-round score of 72. That puts her one shot ahead of two rivals — the Czech Republic’s Anna Sindelarova and Poland’s Aleksandra Jarmolinska. Two Russian women — Nadezda Konovalova and Natalia Vinogradova — are on 70 in the top five.
The next two rounds of qualification stage, the medal rounds of the men’s and women’s, featuring the top six shooters will be held Thursday.
Qatar’s trap shooter Mohamed al-Rumaihi, who has already secured a quota for Tokyo Games, and Saeed Abu Sharib are also taking part in the event. The trap event will start on March 1.
The Cairo event along with next month’s event in New Delhi in India are the two events where shooters can get Olympic quotas for the postponed Tokyo Games which will be held this year.
