Qatar’s Rashid Saleh Hamad triumphed in the men’s skeet event at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Grand Prix in Rabat yesterday.
At the Club Les Chênes venue, Rashid, who led the qualification with Spain’s Juan Jose Aramburu, topped the standings after missing just six targets yesterday. Rashid, who was taking part at an international event after a long break, finished with a score of 54 out of 60. The United Arab Emirates’ Saif bin Futais came second on 52.
Saturday’s leader Aramburu completed the podium places, finishing third with 43 targets out of 50. The pair of Aramburu and Rashid could not be separated during the opening three rounds, with both hitting 24 targets in the opening two, before achieving a perfect score in the third to end on 73.
“It is a big win for me as I was taking part in an international event after a long break. I happy to win for Qatar,” Rashid, the 34-year-old, who represented Qatar at the 2008 and 2016 Olympic Games, told Gulf Times.
In the women’s skeet section Russia’s Alina Fazylzyanova held off the challenge of compatriot Zilia Batyrshina to emerge triumphant. She finished the final with 54 targets hit out of a possible 60. Batyrshina, who performed well during the qualification round, finished as the runner-up with 52 targets out of 60.
Mohamed al-Rumaihi, who has already qualified for the Tokyo Games, the only one to do so for Qatar so far, will compete alongside Nasser al-Hemaidi, Rashid al-Athba and Saeed Abusharib, in the men’s individual section of the Trap event today.
The competition is included in the 2021 World Ranking and will help the shooters to collect qualification points for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
“I am looking forward to tomorrow’s Trap event where Mohamed is taking part. I hope he will also emerge winner,” Rashid added.
