Ambassador of Moldova to Qatar Dr Victor Tvirkun underlined that Qatar has managed to acquire a full-fledged international standing and position thanks to the wise leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, adding that the influence and credibility of Qatar has grown so much that currently Qatar has become a mediator in various regional and international conflicts, most recently the conflict in Afghanistan.

In a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA) on the occasion of Qatar National Day, the Moldova ambassador emphasised that the signing of the Afghan peace agreement in Doha is a recognition by the international community of these acquired attributes of Qatar.

The ambassador congratulated Qatar on its National Day, wishing that it would continue to develop at such impressive pace and build a stable country where traditions, culture and progress persists in harmony and at its best level. He said, "throughout the years, Qatar being in size and population similar to my country, has managed to acquire a full-fledged international standing and position, thanks to the wise leadership of the country, namely His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani."

"In addition, I would like to congratulate cordially once again the leadership of Qatar which has achieved the success of being the host of the prestigious football tournament World Cup to take place in 2022. On this note, I would like to point out that the Moldovan Football Federation has voted in favour of Qatar as the host state," he added.

He added, "In the process of preparations for the prestigious football tournament that will be hosted by your country, the state has seen rapid and robust development in the last few years." He added that what Qatar did so far and still does to organise the event at the highest level impresses a lot, pointing out that the new buildings, stadiums and transport infrastructure will offer to Qatar the unique position in the region to be the centre of sport life not only during the World Cup tournament but for many decades after.

Furthermore, the ambassador praised the measures taken by Qatar against the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, making it a model for organisation on how to combat the pandemic and take the necessary decisions aimed at preventing its spread.

He noted that the public policies adopted by the Qatari leadership have proved fruitful and effective, emphasising that Qatar maintained one of the lowest mortality rates. This achievement is due to the high quality of medical services and the authorities' efforts that are focused on early detection and prevention of serious cases, he added.

The ambassador expressed his appreciation for the valuable assistance provided by Qatar to those in need at the global level to combat this pandemic, adding that "it is hard to see another country which in conditions of pandemic and crisis is offering assistance and help to other countries. It gives me joy that not only the leadership of countries but also leaders of international organisations have remarked over the contribution of Qatar to combating this malady, such as the statements made by Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the UN."

He also expressed appreciation for the 8.5 tonnes of medical aid provided by Qatar to Moldova under the directives of HH the Amir on May 26 to combat coronavirus, pointing out that it is the first ever humanitarian assistance by an Arab country to Moldova, and that it will save lives of thousands of Moldovan people, which shows one of the noblest intentions.

He added, "On behalf of my President, Government and the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, I would like to express a lot of thanks and deep recognition to the wise leadership of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, Amir of Qatar. Republic of Moldova is fully thankful for the medical assistance delivered by Qatar, and our country will never forget the solidarity of our Qatari friends which helps to save lives. We must mention that Qatar is a unique state from the Arab world that has come with medical aid to our country."

In his statement to QNA, Dr Victor Tsvirkun highlighted the Qatar-Moldova's relations that were established on June 13, 1997 and the opening of Moldova's first mission to an Arab country in Qatar. He said, "this gives us the motivation and energy to work on expanding the co-operation between our countries." He described the relations between the two countries as very friendly and with a strong perspective.

He hoped that the 13 bilateral projects that were signed in various fields, such as investments, culture, medicine and education, will facilitate the scope for this solid future co-operation, stating that the two countries are awaiting some other agreements to be signed in the field of visa exemption, double taxation and agriculture.

He stressed that the "friendly and close relations between our countries have manifested itself more times on the international arena, when Moldova has supported Qatar's initiatives and candidatures for elective bodies of international organisations. As a moral support for our friendly country in August 2017, Moldova has founded the Association of Moldova-Qatar called Solidarity."
