As part of the “Qatar Beautification and Our Kids Planting Trees” campaign, trees were planted at a park near the Shura Council building yesterday.
According to a statement issued by the Public Works Authority (Ashghal), the event was organised by the Supervisory Committee for the Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar.
HE the Speaker of the Shura Council Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid al-Mahmoud, HE the Minister of Finance Ali Sherif al-Emadi, and Ashghal president Dr Saad bin Ahmed al-Muhannadi were present.
Shura Council member Abdullah bin Fahad bin Ghorab said he was impressed with the initiative, adding that it spreads awareness about the importance of planting trees and increasing green areas in Qatar.
He also praised the committee’s efforts to involve many institutions and entities of the state in the initiative.
Shura Council member Dr Aisha Yousef al-Mannai expressed delight in the initiative, saying that trees are a symbol of life, growth and continuous development in Qatar.
She thanked the efforts and contributions of His Highness the Amir, the government and ministers.
“We are happy to plant trees today, and we hope that our children and the next generation will harvest the fruits of what we planted,” al-Mannai said.
Mohamed Arqoub al-Khaldi, chairman of the Supervisory Committee for the Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar, said that the “Qatar Beautification and Our Kids Planting Trees” campaign is aimed at spreading awareness about the importance of planting trees, and emphasised the social responsibility of everyone in the protection and preservation of the environment.
The campaign, launched by the committee last year and aimed at planting 1mn trees in co-operation with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), will continue until the end of 2021.
The Supervisory Committee for the Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar works under the MME, in co-ordination with several ministries and other entities, such as the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Ministry of Culture and Sports, Qatar Museums, Qatar Rail, and the Private Engineering Office.
The committee is responsible for the construction of central public parks, the provision of dedicated lanes for pedestrians and bicycles, the development of the Doha Corniche and Central Doha, and increasing afforestation and green areas.
The committee’s work will enhance sustainability through minimising environmental pollution and reducing the emission of CO2 through reduced consumption of energy resources.
It also focuses on the provision of more public transport options, aimed at reducing the use of private cars, and improving lifestyle through clean and safe transportation.
It is also intended to ensure a healthy environment within residential neighbourhoods and places of public gatherings through increased afforestation and landscaping.
