US National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien said yesterday that President Donald Trump’s administration wants to resolve the Gulf crisis before its possible departure from the White House in January, Al Jazeera reported.
The Trump administration hopes to see Qatari aircraft flying over Saudi and Bahraini airspace before its term ends, O’Brien said.
Participating in the Global Security Forum 2020 held virtually yesterday, he said he hoped to see Qatar Airways flying over blockading countries “in the next 70 days”.
“It is in our interest for the GCC to come together. It is in America’s interest to have harmonious relationships within the GCC,” he said, adding that such a development would bring in real economic opportunities across the Middle East.
“We felt that solving the air link issue, where Qatar Airways be able to fly over Saudi and Bahraini airspace, is an important first step in solving that rift, I would like to see that done before, if we end up leaving the office, in the next 70 days,” he told the forum.
He added that the US has good relations with all the Gulf states and they are working hard on solving the rift.
O’Brien said Trump has made extensive contacts to resolve the crisis.
The US official considered that there is a possibility to achieve this, pointing out that relations between the United States, Qatar and Riyadh are good.
