The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) urged the parties to the conflict in the Nagorno-Karabakh region to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure in line with international law and humanitarian law.
"It is now 10 days since violence escalated dramatically in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone. There are already reports of four children killed and seven injured," UNICEF said in a statement.
"Without an end to the fighting, these figures will tragically increase," the statement said.
"The fighting is destroying homes, and damaging schools and other essential infrastructure. We urge all parties to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure from further harm, in line with international and humanitarian law," the UNICEF added.
An immediate cessation of hostilities is in the best interest of every child, according to the statement.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned the continuing escalation of violence in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone, reminding all sides of their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure. He also appealed to all relevant regional and international actors to actively exercise their influence to achieve an urgent end to the fighting and return to negotiations under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs (France, Russia and US).
Clashes continue in the Nagorno-Karabakh region between the Azerbaijani and Armenian armies to control the cities of Fuzuli, Gabriel and Tartar, and with a number of dead and wounded on both sides, the two sides exchanged accusations of violating international laws and attacking civilian targets.
