A symposium of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Reactive Metabolite Study Group (RSMG) was co-organised by a senior faculty member each from Qatar University (QU) and Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI) Wednesday.
Dr Naila Rabbani, professor, Basic Medical Sciences at College of Medicine, QU, and Dr Paul Thornalley, director of the Diabetes Research Centre at QBRI, Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) chaired the symposium as part of the EASD 2020 virtual conference.
The RMSG symposium focused on mathematical metabolic modelling for the intrinsic prediction of the risk of developing insulin resistance and diabetic vascular complications. The speakers were Dr Nicola Lai, University of Cagliari, Italy and Dr Alberto de la Fuente QBRI . They presented updates on the mathematical modelling of metabolic dysfunction linked to the development of vascular complications of diabetes.
Dr Rabbani said the symposium presented and discussed recent advancement made by researchers at QU and QBRI on key metabolic drivers of insulin resistance and diabetic vascular complications.
"With mathematical regulatory models, we can identify key mechanistic biomarkers for risk prediction of development of type 2 diabetes and diabetic vascular complications to support precision medicine”.
“We are excited that we presented collaborative research from Qatar to a global audience at the EASD2020 conference,” Dr Thornalley added.
The RMSG Symposium forms part of the EASD’s 56th annual meeting. Five days conference kicked off on September 21. The EASD annual conference will highlight the latest results in diabetes and related research and the virtual event is expected to attract over 17,000 participants from the global medical community.
