The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced the opening of the entry submission for the Green Award for 2020.

The entries now include all the contractors of Ashghal’s ongoing projects under the Project Affairs Department and is no longer limited to the projects within Ashghal’s Roads Projects Department (RPD), an official statement said.

The expansion of the initiative is aligned with Ashghal’s continuous improvement strategy and its commitment to raise the bar on the implementation of the best international practices for environmental permitting processes and procedures in Ashghal and the construction sector.

Launched in 2018 by Ashghal’s Quality and Safety Department (QSD) and Roads Projects Department (RPD), Green Award is an annual award event developed in order to encourage contractors and consultancies to adopt the best practices for environmental and sustainability measures. It targets all aspects including air quality management, groundwater recycling, carbon emissions reduction, material recycling and cost efficiency.

The initiative is aimed at assessing the effectiveness of sustainability management across projects under implementation and rewarding companies with outstanding and continuous performance on projects. It also aims to identify distinguished sustainability practices on site and share innovations and practical solutions with others for adoption on a wider scale.

The time-table for this year’s event was formally released by QSD on July 12 this year and the applications are requested to be submitted by August 31, 2020.

A selection committee will be established with the representatives from the QSD and Projects Affairs Department. The selection committee will review all applications and shortlist projects for the Green Award. The shortlisted projects will be visited on site and called for a

15 minutes presentation each. Following this, the selection committee will confirm the date of the awards ceremony where the winners of the Overall Green Award and Special Recognition Awards for 2020 will be announced.

The award has been proven to be a great success and has been selected as the “Best Government Initiative” for Sustainability policy by Qatar’s Green Building Council 2019 and it was recently shortlisted for the 2020 Sustainability Impact Awards by British Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) in the Sustainability Campaign for Public Sector category.
