In a bid to attract more farmers and consumers and ensure them better convenience, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) will carry out development works at its agricultural yards.

The works, starting in September, will cover Al Mazroua, Al Sheehaniya and Al Wakra yards in the first phase while Al Khor and Al Thakira and Al Shamal yards will be developed in the second phase.

A statement by Abdulrahman Hassan al-Sulaiti, general supervisor of the yards at the MME, to local Arabic daily 'Arrayah' explained that the plan is to carry out maintenance and development works within the buildings and facilities. As per the plan, roofs are to be completely renovated while damaged portions of buildings will be repaired. These are in addition to installing display boards.

The authorities expect that the development works will draw more customers and farmers to the yards and will increase the revenue. The local vegetable and fruits production, according to the statement, marked a 50% increase last year and developing the yards will help farmers find better marketing facilities.

The MME expects an increase in the number of local farms in the next season of the yards. The current season witnessed local yards flush with fresh farm products including watermelons, pumpkins and onions.
