His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Khalifa al-Thani’s Caracole Du Loup landed her first victory, winning the Prix Maderba-Prix des Vignerons de Glanes (maiden) at Royan-La Palmyre, France, on Sunday evening.
The four-year-old Purebred Arabian managed to put the 2,200m race for four-year-olds and older horses to bed comfortably by a four-and-a-half-length margin. The chestnut filly, trained by Francois Rohaut, had been the runner-up in a good race at Toulouse last time out.
It was Chafika, who led the race with a very steady pace while Caracole Du Loup, ridden by Damien Morin, sat in third position. Wearing blinkers, Caracole Du Loup showed a nice turn of foot in the straight, overhauling the leader and taking the lead with ease, especially considering the four-kilo weight penalty. Damien de Watrigant-trained Chafika, the pacesetter, finished in second under Laurie Foulard.
Bahjah, who is trained by Charles Gourdain, was further three-quarters-of-a-length behind in third under Clement Merille.
Bred by Jean-Marc Saphores, Caracole Du Loup is the sister of Faucon Du Loup, champion in Russia and Group 1 PA winner. She comes from the famous French dam line of Nevada II.
