The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), represented by the Environmental Monitoring and Laboratory Department, took part in the first technical meeting of environmental expectations in the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) countries.

The meeting was held for national experts from environmental ministries and agencies in the GCC and a presentation was made on the experience of assessing the global environment outlook, an official MME press statement said.

The meeting that was held via videoconferencing came in the wake of the agreement signed between the GCC General Secretariat and the West Asia Office of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). As per the agreement, the first report on the state of the environment in the GCC countries will be issued providing an objective analysis of the state of the environment with its geographical extension in the six countries and their surrounding seas as well as the state of the environment in air quality, water resources, biological diversity, land resources, coastal and marine environments fields.

The report will also address expectations for the foreseeable future and the policies needed to maintain a healthy environment with healthy people to achieve the aspirations of the GCC countries in sustainability.

Representing Qatar, Dr Marwa Mohamed al-Ghanem, Engineer Ziyad al-Ghanem and Dr Ahmed Aksakal from the Environmental Monitoring and Laboratory Department, Talib al-Hajri, Director of the Department of Environmental Protection, Natural Reserves, and Wildlife, Yasser Nasr and Nasser al-Mansouri from the Department of Protection and Wildlife, Khaled al-Nahri from the Centre for Geographic Information Systems (CGIS) and Khaled Rashid from the Qatar General Corporation for Electricity and Water (Kahramaa) attended the meeting.
