Qatar saw a substantial three-digit growth in the building permits issued in four of its seven municipalities; indicating solid outlook for the construction sector in particular and non-hydrocarbons and the overall economy in general despite Covid-19 challenges.

In its latest data, the Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) also found a substantial increase in the building completion certificates issued across all the municipalities in the review period.

The PSA figures suggest that the total number of new building permits issued were 572, of which Al Rayyan constituted 29% or 167 permits, Wakrah (22% or 125), Al Daayen (17% or 100), Doha (17% or 97), Umm Slal (5% or 30), Al Khor (4% or 22), Al Shahaniya (3% or 18) and Al Shamal (2% or 13).

On a monthly basis, at the national level, the number of building permits issued more than doubled with Al Rayyan reporting near three-fold jump (193%), Al Shamal (160%), Wakrah (145%), Al Daayen (133%), Doha (80%), Al Khor (57%) and Al Shahaniya (20%); whereas there was a 6% fall in the building permits issued in Umm Slal.

The building permits data is of particular importance as it is considered an indicator for the performance of the construction sector which in turn occupies a significant position in the national economy.

The PSA data indicates that the new building permits (residential and non-residential) constituted 49% (282 permits) of the total building permits issued this June, additions 47% (271 permits), and fencing 3% (19 permits).

Of the new residential buildings permits, villas topped the list, accounting for 68% (154 permits) of the total, dwellings of housing loans 19% (43 permits) and apartments 10% (22 permits).

Among non-residential sector, commercial structures accounted for 63% or 35 permits, the government buildings 18% (10 permits) and industrial buildings as workshops and factories 16% (nine permits).

Qatar saw a total of 320 building completion certificates issued this June, of which 233 or 73% was for the new buildings (residential and non-residential) and 87 or 27% for additions.

Al Rayyan municipality topped the municipalities with 90 certificates or 28% of the total, Wakra 78 (24%), Al Daayen 58 (18%), Doha 52 (16%), Umm Slal 17 (5%), Al Shahaniya nine (3%), and Al Khor and Al Shamal eight (3%) each.

The overall building completion certificates issued more than doubled month-on-month with Al Shamal growing eight-fold or 700% increase, Al Daayen (190%), Wakrah (129%), Doha (108%), Al Khor (100%), Umm Slal (89%), Al Rayyan (55%) and Al Shahaniya (29%).

Of the 196 residential buildings completion certificates issued, as many as 109 or 56% were for villas, dwellings of housing loans 71 or 36% and apartments 13 or 7%.

Of the 109 villas completion certificates issued this June, as many as 34 were in Al Daayen, 28 in Rayyan, 21 in Wakrah, nine in Umm Slal, eight in Doha, five in Al Shamal, three in Al Khor and one in Al Shahaniya.

Of the 71 dwellings of housing loans completion certificates issued, Al Rayyan saw 29, Wakrah 23, Al Daayen (nine), Umm Slal (four), and Doha, Al Khor and Al Shahaniya (two each).

In the case of 13 apartments, Doha received as many as seven completion certificates issued, Wakrah four and Al Khor and Al Daayen one each.
