Qatar Chamber announced that it would hold a conference on the development of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) on Tuesday, July 7, under the patronage of HE the Minister of Commerce & Industry Ali bin Ahmed al-Kuwari and Qatar Chamber chairman Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim al-Thani.

The conference, organised by Al Mashoura Advertising via video conference, aims to raise awareness among the business sector on Law No 12 of 2020 regulating the partnership between public and private sectors, issued by the His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani last month.

Qatar Chamber director general Saleh bin Hamad al-Sharqi said the conference is expected to be attended by speakers from the public and private sector, and the participation of businessmen, representatives of government bodies, and experts from various countries.

He noted that the conference will examine opportunities and challenges resulting from the new law. It will also review the international best practices and experiences in partnership and discuss many research studies on PPPs and what the private sector could expect from partnerships.

He said the PPP Law enhances the economic and investment environment, which witnessed “great development,” especially after the issuance of many new economic legislations, such as the law regulating the Non-Qatari Capital Investment in the Economic Activity, the Unified Register Law, the Anti-money Laundering and Terrorism Financing Law, the law on supporting the competitiveness of national products and combating harmful practices to them in international trade, the law on the regulation of non-Qatari ownership and utilisation of real estate, the Industrial Zones Law, and other legislation and laws that have contributed to making Qatar “a future for global investments.”

Al-Sharqi noted that during the conference, ideas will be exchanged on enhancing partnerships, and the sectors that may attract partnership projects between the two sectors.

He expressed hope that PPPs will accelerate the introduction of governmental projects and push forward economic development, in addition to attracting local and foreign investments to different economic sectors.

In 2009, the Qatar Chamber held a conference on partnerships that recommended the issuing of a law that regulates PPPs.
