In this regard, he pointed out that a comprehensive national Field Gene Bank was set up for all important wild and local species in Qatar about 12 years ago, in addition to rare species adapted to their conditions, with a view to protecting and preserving them and conducting research and studies on them, as well as to benefiting from it in food security programs, provision of alternative feeds, rehabilitation of grazing land, wild cultivation and desertification control.

Agriculture expert at the Department of Agricultural Research Dr Hayel Alwawi explained that most important and rare plant species that are endangered were preserved in the Field Gene Bank with focus on the species that are of food, fodder, pastoral, medicinal or aromatic importance.
He indicated that the number of trees, shrubs and perennials that have been preserved so far is about 110 important or rare plant species or threatened with extinction.
He reviewed the most important species that have been successfully cultivated in Rawdat Al Faras Research Station to date, noting that most medicinal and pharmaceutical drugs are extracted from wild, medicinal and aromatic plants.
He also tackled the characteristics, importance, benefits and uses of the six wild, pastoral and medicinal plant species that the department succeeded in cultivating this year.
